Annoyed with myself

15 weeks along and today I gave in to going to sushi for lunch. I ordered 2 cooked rolls and even confirmed with the waitress that they were in fact cooked. One roll showed up fairly quickly and I ate it. The next roll took longer since it required baking the salmon. So 10 minutes later it shows up looking lovely but covered in salmon roe (orange egg thingies). I was immidietly annoyed because I don't think they are cooked and even looked it up a bit online. I could have sent it back but it took so long and I was hungry so I did my best to scrape it off. I did pretty good but I know some made it down my mouth. I then started worrying about cross contamination with knives and bacteria and suddenly my hopeful delightful lunch turned into worry and dread.
I'm very hopeful that everything is ok but does anyone know when/how you know if you've harmed your baby from eating something contaminated? Is it because you become sick right away? Or is there a defect that shows up at birth?
I'm being overly worried lately because my naesea has lessened and I'm not feeling any flutters yet and it's 3 weeks until my next ultrasound.
Bring pregnant is tough.

  • You are fine, I eat sushi on a regular basis, and did when pregnant with DS too. I eat the cooked rolls, and I always have fish roe too.

Sushi is fine.  In "Expecting Better" (a book I recommend) the author Emily Oster researches the recommendation that pregnant women shouldn't eat sushi and found that getting sick from sushi is no more prevalent if you are pregnant or not, and is no more dangerous to you pregnant or not (unlike foods that are likely to contain listeria - as listeria IS more harmful to pregnant women.)  But listeria is not the concern for sushi, it's other food contaminates which would make you sick right away.  There isn't a long term concern - unless you eat a lot of mercury-heavy fishes daily in pregnancy.

Long story short, it's fine.  My Japanese SIL ate sushi throughout her pregnancies.

  • Thank you for the replies. It does make me feel better. My husband is very much against me eating it right now so I was being sneaky and am carrying some guilt from that too lol
  • @ekelley1010  Don't feel guilty, I know lots of pregnant people who eat sushi and it sounds like you were really cautious with your choices. I know it's hard not to worry, hang in there :)
  • I have most definitely eaten sushi since pregnant, especially the raw stuff! I have also eaten lunch meat :) since I'm a FTM I can't say whether my baby is perfectly fine, but I'm honestly more concerned with eating processed crap than eating fresh raw fish.
  • I've also eaten a decent amount of sushi while pregnant, both raw and cooked... in fact that's dinner tonight. I specifically asked both my doctor and nurse and they told me it was fine and I should just avoid specific higher mercury fishes. Since I never eat any of the ones they listed anyway I'm unconcerned.
