One & Done: Only child

Weekly Perks to OAD

Yeah, I think we should do this weekly ;)
So many things pop up on even a weekly basis that makes me think "wow, glad I have just one!"... and things you don't necessarily think about when they're itty bitty.

This AM at school a mom was complaining because... "Crap.  My grade K child has her moving up ceremony at 9am next week, and my 6th grader has an orientation at the SAME time because he's moving to junior high, parents to attend also..."    oops!

I realized this morning that I NEVER have to choose between my kids and which event is deemed more important.
Have you made any realizations this week?

Re: Weekly Perks to OAD

  • With starting my new job soon i am starting a new schedule. We have to get up earlier and i'm thankful to only have 1 child to get dressed and get to school.

  • I am planning our FL trip and its very expensive and time consuming to buy everything and pack. I am glad I only have one kid (well 2 if you couldn't H) to pack stuff for. :))

  • This weekend we went shopping for some new clothes for LO. We live in rural CO so we leave every couple of months to do that. Whoa, all the stuff that we bought for LO was on sale but we still spent a lot and I can't imagine buying clothes/equipment/toys for another one.

And she did great with all the driving and shopping and only started to get cranky as we were coming home. It was nice listening to one child crying instead of two.

I had this last week when we went to Boston for my brothers wedding. (2 weeks ago? haha I lost track).  Just packing for one kid is a lot, I can't imagine more.  Plus $$$.   She was so excited to have her own queen bed in the hotel!

  • Nothing too big this week.... I was able to nap while LO was napping yesterday, and I definitely don't think I would be able to do that with two.

  • There's no way I could pay for daycare for two kids. So glad I don't have to pinch pennies that much.

  • DD has been potty trained for about 3 weeks. I never have to be in the diaper stage again! She is actually doing really well with over night too, so I will most likely never have to buy diapers again,

Walking to do my errands (since my husband's car died and he had to take mine to go to work) with the dog and one kid is WAY easier than two kids.

  • DS is 2 years old and has never slept through the night. Another child like this would break my spirit forever. Also, he was sick and now I'm sick. And we can just lump around on the couch without having to worry about entertaining another child or tending to a newborn.
  • We went to the lake and I kept saying it's so nice I got to swim with dd and my dh got to film us instead of one of us having to sit on side and watch a crying baby.

  • 1) I told dd to wipe her face. and she did it. the more independent she gets, the less I ever want to go back to babies!

    2) remember pregnancy tendonitis? like, when you could not even open and close your hands without wincing in pain? well, when you're one and done, NEVER AGAIN.

  • Let's say we had 2 kids, 5+years apart where the oldest was at least in kindergarten. That could be $80 - $100k in daycare over the course of 10 years, not including before and after school care. Fortunately before and after care is a bargain at the neighborhood rec center ($30/wk). It almost gives me tears - tears of joy! So in 2 years, maybe it'll be like us getting a raise. Real vacations are in our future :)

  • I only have to be a single parent to ONE child. Good lord, if I had two to worry about right now, I think I'd die.

  • This week it's only having to worry about loading one child into the car. I watched a Mama of multiples do it and the whole process looked exhausting!

You got a new job!!!! I missed that one.....stupid work getting in the way! Congrats! So happy for you!
  • Yesterday we had a BBQ/picnic and it was soooooo relaxing with one kid.  We had to keep an eye on her, she was in the pool.  But it was super stress free and relaxing. We had an amazing time!

  • I'm with everyone with daycare/preschool costs. It almost wouldn't be worth it for me to work if we had two.

  • DD is going to some sleep regression, seems it's wonder week time again. Getting her to bed at night is the worst it's ever been. One LO crying is enough to drive both of us slightly mad, cannot imagine having to entertain/soothe/put to bed another one on top of that. I think it would result in DH and I taking it out on each other, which would be bad.

Here too! Going to bed goes fine but there's inevitable screaming at 2am. Glad it's just DD!
