Starting solids yet?

Has anyone begun to start? My pedi said anywhere between 4-6 months. I see E eying my food so I'm thinking it's about time.... What about you guys?

Re: Starting solids yet?

  • I was originally thinking 6 months...but I might start small at 5 months and see how it goes. She sits with us at dinner and follows the fork to our mouths intensely the whole time. I have a doctors appt on the 19th to check her weight so I'll be asking then! (5 months on the 29th)

  • DD is interested in our food, but pedi said not to start solids yet, as we need to focus on her weight gain. But, she said in 'normal' instances, she would be fine with starting solids anytime now. LO is 4mo.

Maybe I better start eating near LO. He's usually sleeping while I eat, or occasionally chilling in his swing or playmat where I can see him while I'm eating.

  • Anyone doing baby led weaning? I think that is what it's called. We never did purees with ds1. Just steamed and soft veggies, meats etc. Basically he ate the same things we did (no spices/salt) from 6 months on. We never pureed it. He would gnaw on a piece of broccoli that was big enough for him to grasp. It worked really well for him and us.

  • We are waiting until at least 6 months and will look for the ready signs such as DS being able to sit up without support, loss of the tongue-thrust reflex, development of a pincer grasp, trying to grab food and put it in his mouth, etc.

Right now he doesn't do any of the above.

  • We started DD on purees at about this point, but Logan doesn't sit as well as she did, so we're going to wait until he's a little more steady.
  • We aren't in any big rush to start solids, partly because feeding solids is kind of a PITA lol.  It's messy, more dishes, and more food to prepare. And ITA w/ wildflower on the poop change.

Ditto PPs on waiting for all the signs of readiness. My LO has none of the signs, and she'll be 4m on Saturday.  We waited until 6m with LO1, and I doubt we'll start before 5.5-6m with LO2 either.

  • I started DS on cereal at 4 mos, and it was a disaster. But I felt like I "had" to, as cereal starting at 4 mos was still the thing when DS was little.

I'll prob do BLW this time around. So I anticipate BM only till at least 6 mos. Screw all those little purées that take up room in my pantry! :)

Sorry if this post is redundant but we have our opinions of what we are planning on doing....then as our babies grow and change, so do our plans. I was going to wait till 6 months but she's hungry allllllllll the time

I have never exclusively bottle fed so I feel like all my gut instincts with feeding are thrown off. Everything I have done in the past just doesn't seem to work the same. I was afraid to start too soon when I was breast feeding. I didn't want her to self wean too early. Now, she's downing 6 oz and hungry half an hour later. I hate to see her so hungry so I will probably give it a go this weekend. Just curious what others are doing

This Times a million. This is my 3rd baby so I want to prolong adding to the mess/chaos as long as I can. It's just so much easier to whip out the boob.

  • LO is 4 months yesterday, and we just started with oatmeal this weekend on the advice of our pedi given a whole host of reasons. She's done two nights and done pretty well with it! It's an unholy mess, but she's actually getting a good amount in her belly so we're pretty confident in her readiness.

  • Our daycare provider just asked me about this today.  Our pedi said he wasn't ready yet at his 4 month appointment.  We'll probably wait until 6 months.
  • Random thought.... Once we start feeding solids the high chair comes out. That's 3 years or so of a high chair being out in my tiny apartment. :((

@Tally06‌ - the pincer grasp doesn't come until 9-12m, but at 6m, babies can scoop the food to their mouths. The pincer will come with practice!
