Dreft..do I have to?

Okay so my sister gave me a heap of her old baby stuff this weekend. My mom suggested I wash it all in dreft detergent. I went to buy some and it cost like 13 bucks for a teeny tiny jug, which just seems outrageous to me. I bought it this time, but are there alternatives? Do I have to use that stuff? Any advice from you STM+ moms would be appreciated.

  • Agree with previous posters. I'm a FTM, but since we already use free and clear detergents I don't see a reason to get something separate for baby.

  • You don't have to and you shouldn't. Dreft isn't good, it has scents and other nasty stuff.

We use All Free & Clear. Any "Free & Clear" detergent will work and be better for baby than Dreft.
And an added bonus, we don't have to do separate loads for baby stuff, it all gets washed together.

  • I don't use it, and in fact, I never wash baby stuff by itself, so having separate baby detergent would be a waste. I buy whatever dye/perfume free detergent is on sale, and use that to wash all household laundry. At this point, it's pretty obvious that none of the kids have any allergies/sensitivities, so I probably don't even need to buy the free & clear, but it's part of my routine now.
  • We already used a free and clear detergent before DS and used that on his baby clothes rather than Dreft.

  • We've always used Tide's free and clear.  My little guy still broke out horribly.  I wasn't using fabric softener or dryer sheets with his items (I used the dryer balls for his clothes) but the doctor suggested we all stop using them if we were holding him and it did help, so I'd at least switch to non-scented dryer sheets for yourself for now and/or a fabric softener just in case.  He's 2 1/2 now and I use the Method fabric softener on everyone's clothes and he's fine with it, but I still use unscented dryer sheets on his stuff.

  • Thanks y'all. I thought that might be the case and my mom was just being a little pushy/cray.
  • Yep free and clear, no need to buy super expensive.

  • Dreft is a lot cheaper at Costco or on Amazon if you have access to either...

  • Nope, you don't even have to use a free & clear detergent if you choose not to. Those are more sensitive detergents, but not necessary. I started washing my son's clothes in our regular detergent from day 1 with plans to swap only if he showed a sensitivity. My 2 cents.

  • I should add we already used a F&C because my step-son and I are both sensitive to the regular crap.  Ugh.

I used Tide Free & Clear when DS was a newborn, and it wasn't any more expensive than regular Tide.  You may be fine with just washing the stuff with normal detergent, but some babies do have sensitive skin and Free & Clear detergents can be helpful.

  • My 1st developed a rash as an infant because he was super sensitive to dyes and fragrances in our detergent. Pediatrician said any "Free and Clear" version would solve the problem and it cleared right up. With both the girls, I switched to dye/fragrance free brands until they were around a year old and never had problems. Plan to do the same with this one.

  • Makes you wonder why Dreft is sold as a baby detergent, with all the crap that is in it.

Yeah and it's labled "pediatrician recommended." I feel douped.
  • Don't. Dreft has perfumes that aren't good. Waste of money. It's a marketing ploy. We use a free and clear but only bc we cd.

  • I'm with all the PP. Use a free and clear detergent. That is what we already used, so I just added DD stuff right in. I usually use Tide or All. I just stock up whenever they go on sale. I am not a Dreft detergent fan at all, but that being said their stain remover is some of the best stuff I have ever used. It gets all kinds of stuff out. Right now I am actually using the generic BRU and it is just as good. I spray it on as soon as I remove the garment and then again right before throwing it into the wash.

  • Like most everyone else in thread, we use free and clear detergent (Kirkland Signature brand from Costco) and I used it with both my children. It's never been an issue.
  • Lol, we also use All c&c, and I think Dreft is gross. It made my son break out. Someone gave me a jug at a baby shower so I washed everything in it before he was born, then I had to go back and rewash it. That was fun.

  • I use purex they have a baby detergent with dreft. It's so much cheaper and does the same job.

I used regular detergent once because we ran out and mistake on my part he broke out bad. My mom said I was the same way when I was a baby. She had to use detergent with dreft. My brother was fine wth regular though.

  • I'm hoping to just use regular tide. If there's an issue, I'll change to a free and clear kind, but honestly I really like the way tide smells and unscented laundry never seems as fun when it comes out of the wash for me
  • What @WildFlower810‌ said! You don't need fabric softener or sheets! Just put vinegar in your softener dispenser and it'll do the trick. I also do this if I've left a load in the washer too long and the clothes start to smell. An extra splash of vinegar and a rinse cycle, and everything is nice smelling again :)
