Delicate Condition at work

I work out of town from my boss and until recently it has been a very unfulfilling job with little direction.  My boss mentioned that he was taking it easy on me due to my condition and he was going to have to work hard to work around my "Life Style Choice" in which he is referring to me having a child.  I don't know why this irks me so much, but I'm 32 years old with a successful career in a mans field.  I took the office job to be home more. I have more field experience than 90% of the guys that I work with, and I haven't let this pregnancy get in the way of anything I've done including 3 week long training in Houston, and weekly trips to Arkansas and Kansas.  Grrrrrr... Life Style Choice my ass you little troll!!

  • Sounds like he's stuck in the 1950's. Sorry :(

  • I would be irked as well.  That is very condescending and just rude.  Sorry you have to deal with that.

  • A little different from your story but I used to work with someone who would very much distinguish between woman's work and man's work. I once was lifting sometime heavy (not pregnant), and he rushed over to stop me and said I would hurt my ovaries and proceeded to move the box for me, sorry your boss sucks!

  • I also work remote from my boss and in a male dominated field.  I get lip service about how he has no problem with me being a mom and then get horrible reviews and non existent raises.  I will be very happy to start job searching in two years when this LO is in full time day care.

  • I just told my boss last week that I was going to take an additional 2 weeks of maternity leave for a total of 8 weeks.  He actually asked me if I wanted to work from home for those additional 2 weeks.  I said no way.  While it makes me feel empowered that he is concerned about the office running properly while I am out...I was a little offended (I am already dealing with the struggle of going back to work after this short amount of time).  His wife gets to stay at home with their kids 100% of the time (in which he brags about all the time) and he is acting like 8 weeks is FOREVER.  Grr.

  • I would be so pissed. I went to my boss's boss about a month ago to discuss my boss's behavior that I thought was unprofessional and anti-company policy. He's since changed his ways so I can only assume my boss talked with him. I told his boss that if things didn't improve my next stop was HR.

Do you work for a small company or a large one? Is there anyone you can talk to?

Grrr that would make me so mad!!! I have a similar situation... I took this job because I was promised I could work from home a bit, have a flexible schedule (I'm managing so I was told I can make my own schedule) and that I would be able to sit and take breaks. WELL.. I stand 8 + hours a day, run back and forth between buildings for pittly little shit, they have now told me what my schedule is + additional bullshit. Unfortunately I find the older people do not understand. They don't consider women that are pregnant. So I find these similar struggles. Wow, it feels good to get this out with other women with the same problems! I hope you can all find a solution. It sure is stressful and I would just like to be able to focus more on my pregnancy than stress at work!
  • My boss stopped by about 2 months ago and asked (again) when my due date was.  I said August 12th and his response was:
'Loooooong sigh.......You know that is right in the middle of your big proposal, right?  That's not good timing'.  Did he really say that?  I mean if he wants to get technical, I was pregnant before the new proposal schedule came out so technically their timimg was bad for scheduling the due date around my due date!  People need to learn to use their filters.

  • The last company I worked for I had a bunch of male co-workers of Filipino background, so they had a different mentality on women.  Anytime I carried anything they would take it out of my hands.  One time I was even told that my ovaries would fall out!  Needless to say I was happy to tell them they were wrong!

You're boss is so out of line, I probably would have given a quite the verbal lashing for that.  And if it's an office job what is he "taking it easy" on you with?  Sounds like a typical statement of someone who doesn't get it and doesn't have kids.

  • I've been thinking about this a lot and since I have communication problem with my boss anyway, I'm just going to take note as to what was said and when... But I think thatviys more of him being a socially awkward engineer... Yes he does have a daughter, but she is about my ago now... Im not going to make an issue out of it and he has been more than understanding about things like drs apt and stuff like that... By its still something to keep in mind and take note of... He's just a weird little troll guy...
  • Ugh.  I'm sorry.  Pregnancy is NOT a "lifestyle choice," just a temporary part of life.  Sorry he's not supporting you in a better way.  Glad you feel comfortable standing up for yourself - you might just want all of those 8 weeks.
