LO's personality in public

How does your LO react to people outside your home?  LO is very skeptical of people he doesn't know and strangers constantly say to me "He's such a serious little guy"  I was just wondering if this was typical of babies.  LO is very curious and he stares a lot and I can see the gears working for him to try and figure out whats going on. He's happy and giggly around people he knows so I'm not worried developmentally, just curious what other babies are like.

Re: LO's personality in public

  • It really depends. When she's tired she's very shy and clingy. If she's not tired she's usually happy and may smile or wave. DD1 loved everyone always. Girl would go to anyone !

  • We call our LO a people watcher and she is exactly that. She does smile at strangers as long as they don't get too close. She won't let anyone hold her other then DH or I and it's frustrating the crap out of me. Sometimes we even get comments asking about what we did to her to make her that way...
  • @Tally879 my LO is the exact same way! People always comment how serious or observant she is. Occasionally she will crack a smile for a stranger but it's not very often. She's all smiles and laughs around people she knows or once she has had a few minutes to warm up to someone.
  • @Meganbryn  yeah they sound very similar.  He's very hesitant until he's watched people for awhile.  He'll let a stranger hold him but he'll glare at me until I take him back.
  • We got his pictures taken at a studio today and every picture is of his serious stranger danger face
  • We have a serious LO here too. It's hard for me to even get a smile or laugh out of her. The only person she giggles and laughs for all the time is her dad. If she's in her stroller or my arms and strangers come up to her she gets inquisitive I guess you could say. She has smiled a couple times but more often than not it's a serious stare.
  • It's really common for babies to get cautious of strangers at this age.

However, DD is not really cautious at all. She is so interested in looking at everything and studying everything around her but if someone come up and talks to her she will make eye contact and smile and be super friendly to them. She has never gotten nervous or upset if a stranger (to her, I don't let random people hold her, lol) holds her or talks to her, etc. I don't know if she'll get that way later on but right now it doesn't seem like it, she just loves everyone, lol.
  • DD is a little entertainer. Sometimes she gets a poker face if she's tired and she just looks completely zoned out.

My DD likes to look at people but won't go to just anyone. She'll usually smile at almost everyone though..... she'd go to kids any time or day though.
  • My LO is such a ladies man! Smiling laughing talking to women and stranger danger with men. Irrespective of whether he knows them or not.
  • DD always stares for a while at any stranger but she'll smile back if they play or chat with her.

DD has always been more social, but over the last couple months has become a little more shy and has separation anxiety if I try to leave her with someone she doesn't know. With strangers she is very coy, she likes to make faces and smile at them and likes it when people talk to her...so long as I am close enough that she feels secure. When she meets someone new they have to talk and play with her for a few minutes before she is ok with them holding her.
This describes DS. He is a total ham but he has to feel secure. He will also get offended if someone he likes doesn't speak to him. ;;)
  • My LO is a ham....he loves people!

  • Oh yes LO has to study every one before she will even consider giving them a smile if she doesn't know them!

@Tally879 this was us too! We had Easter pictures taken (with real bunnies and flowers and stuff) and we did mommy and me pictures about a month a go and she was super serious the whole time! I'm hoping she'll smile some when they do her daddy and me ones on Saturday but I dunno. lol.
