Head Wettings...not the norm?

Just following up on the 'dadchelor' debate above.  I've never heard of 'dadchelor' parties, but "head wettings" are very normal for my culture.  Typically, whilst Mom is still in hospital, Dad and mates get together at the bar to celebrate the birth of the baby.  It's different from the whole gift-giving type of scenario, and is very much an excuse to drink - get a quick one (or three) in before Mom and baby come home.  Back-slapping, cigar smoking etc etc...is that not typically done in the US?

  • I think you meant to post this in the Third Tri board, but I have never heard of this done in the US.

  • I don't think hospital stays here are generally long enough for a new dad to take a night off and drink before the baby comes home.

DH has a friend from England that told him they had to have a "baby wetting" before it was born. DH had no idea what he was talking about, but he apparently said the same thing where basically they all had to go out and drink before the baby is born. Nothing about while I was in the hospital, though.

  • While I was in the hospital for 4 days recovering from my c-section with DS1, DH stayed with me the whole time. On the third night, while my mom was visiting, I sent him out to a nearby bar/restaurant (one of our favorite places) to take some time to himself and get something decent to eat and a drink. A bit different than the idea here, but I think it was good for him to get away for a bit.  Unfortunately for him, now that have a toddler at home, if he leaves the hospital this time, it is less likely to be for a good meal and a beer.

  • I think it used to be the norm here in Australia, but don't hear of it happening so much these days.

This. I had a CS and the first night, my DH and MIL both stayed with me. Thank the good Lord MIL was there, because the nurse was swamped with another mom (she was a little high maintenance, i guess) and DH passed the eff out. MIL got up to hand DD to me for feedings and diaper changes. DH did leave the next day to shower and take a nap on a comfortable bed, but there was always someone sitting with me at the hospital.

  • We are Americans living in the UK and first heard of this a few months ago and had no idea what it was!  Apparently not an American thing... seems selfish for DH to go drinking while I'm in labor?  It must still be big here, because the first prenatal group session we went to, the midwife had this whole section on why it's not a good idea to go out and "wet the baby's head"! LOL

  • I've never heard of it. I'd frown upon it though if dh left me to go get drunk right after our baby's born. If anyone is drinking it's gonna be me. ;-)
