NBR: party gurus- suggestions for planning son's high school grad party

My oldest just graduated and I'm having a party for him at home in a couple of weeks. We borrowed a couple tables from a friend (planning on setting up in the yard) and I've ordered the cake from Costco. Other than that, I haven't done a thing. I'm trying to look into more inexpensive places for decorations, etc. And I've browsed Pinterest for some creative ideas but really haven't found much. Anyone know of any cool, creative grad party ideas? I could use all the help I can get! Thanks!!

What time of day will the party be? Do you want to serve a meal (like a BBQ) or just some easy-to-eat snacks? Will it mostly be his friends attending or will there be family/adults?

ETA: How many guests will you be expecting?

  • Thanks everyone. You're probably right. He won't even care about all the little detail I put into it. He's so indifferent about everything..

I'm thinking it will be about 25-35 people. I'd love to do a barbecue but we don't have a grill :( would ordering a bunch of pizzas be cheesy? (No pun intended)

  • Totally agree with @MrMrsandBaby‌!

If you just want snack foods, chips and dip, hummus and veggies, a cheese and crackers platter, and fruit, would be simple and not too budget-breaking. If you want to avoid the tongs and big platter thing, you can serve fruit and even veggies in individual cups (if the extra work doesn't bother you). Like this, just less...formal:

Iced tea, water, and soda for drinks (or lemonade or punch if you want to get fancy) and you're set! :)

Decorating with balloons and some matching tablecloths/serve-ware is more than enough to set the atmosphere. I might decorate in his school colors, or with silver, white and red.

Music is a plus. You can even let him create the playlist for the party!

Pizzas would be great!!! That's an awesome option that's really easy for you. :)

  • Agree to stay off of Pinterest - especially for a boy's HS graduation, it will kill you trying to do the stuff you see there!  I think some balloons, banner and food and drinks is about all you need.  Maybe some music in the background.

If you have them, some yard games (bags, Frisbee, whatever you've got) are good to have around.  My brother basically sat in a corner just talking to his friends and played bags the whole time,  He wouldn't have noticed if a clown jumped out of a plane (although a stripper in a cake may have gotten his attention!).

What is the bags game you are talking about? Might be an idea. I was also thinking of maybe preparing a bunch of water balloons too though it will be a pain with clean up. Still, might be something both the young kids and teens can have fun with?

Some people call it corn hole?  Basically tossing bean bags across to a board with a hole in it.

  • It's just a bean bag toss game (but you often do it against a partner with a different color of bags to compare accuracy). You can buy a board and bean bags or make your own. :)
