Newborn's eye color

I know most babies are born with blue/grey eyes and that it can take up to a year to settle into their ultimate color but I'm just so curious about what color DD's eyes will be. I have dark dark brown and DH is super light green. Right now DDs are pretty blue but seem to be lightening up everyday so I'm thinking they'll end up green.

What color are your LO's eyes right now and any thoughts/predictions on what they'll turn out to be?

Re: Newborn's eye color

  • She has beautiful blue eyes like her aunt who passed away two years ago so I'm hoping they stay that way. However, I have brown eyes and dh has green so who knows... She'll probably end up with brown like me.

  • My LO has med/dark blue eyes right now. I'm very curious as well. I have blue eyes and DH has green/hazel eyes. We have a really strong blue gene in our family and I'm so hoping he got it too. The baby takes after me more so than my husband so it is a good possibility. Anyone LOs eyes already turn brown? A book I have says some dark eyes turn pretty quick within the first month but won't be the permanent color until 9 months
  • Right now LO has medium/dark blue eyes. I have green eyes and MH has beautiful ice blue eyes. LO looks a lot like MH so I'm hoping he has his eyes. However he does have my brown/reddish hair color right now so I think that hair color and blue eyes will look nice.
  • Right now LO has hazel eyes. Mine are brown and DH's are hazel. I'm hoping they stay hazel. I've also noticed that his hair has gotten lighter since birth so who knows what he will end up having.
  • At 4 weeks LOs eyes have lightened to a medium blue. Mine are blue and DHs are like a greenish. I hope they stay blue!
  • DH and I both have green eyes so I know DS will eventually have green eyes.

  • Right now his eyes are still blue. I have brown eyes, DH has green eyes. DS1 apparently locked in the recessive gene and has blue eyes.
  • His eyes are a very dark blue. DS1's eyes stayed blue despite the fact that MH and I don't have blue. So fingers crossed DS2 lucks out as well! I love blue eyes!

  • DS was a dark blue, with a brownish tint, and then got lighter. He ended up with Hazel eyes (first appearing at 8 months). DDs eyes are more "blue." I think she will end up with eyes closer to green. I have dark brown, and DH has green. FIL has blue eyes, much like his side.

  • DS changes between blue and grey. DH is blue and I am green. DS is a twin of DH as a baby so I hope he will be green so we share something!
  • They started out dark blue and they are lightening up to a medium blue. Same as DD1's did, and hers ended up a really pretty light blue like DH, so I'm hoping DD2's do the same.

  • My middle son was born with powder blue eyes. They got lighter and lighter, and at his first birthday were clear blue. When he was four, they turned green, and got darker every year. They are now a deep green with brown flecks. Don't get too attached to their eye color- they continue to change!
  • My eyes are so dark, that people call them shark eyes. My DH has greenish hazel eyes. My DS has very dark blue eyes, so I'm thinking he'll end up with dark brown like me.

DS was born with eyes so dark they just looked black. Over time they lightened up to a dark blue-gray and now they're a lighter blue-gray with some hints of green. He gets the blue-gray from me and the green from my dad.

DD's eyes are dark but obviously blue now and DH is hoping they lighten up to a clear brighter blue like his.

DS has dark blue now and DH and i both have blue eyes so he'll definitely have blue eyes, just not sure what shade.

  • Mine are gray-blue, and MH has hazel- but all 3 colors. Outer rim is dark blue, then light green and gold in the center. He and his cousin both have these tri-color eyes. I was hoping our DS1 would have hazel like his Dad, he was born with dark blue and they lightened to gray-blue like mine. DS2 also has dark blue but still hoping they will eventually match daddy's. MIL said H had dark blue eyes until almost 2 yrs old and then they turned color. It is totally random, as one of my 3 sisters has light green eyes, the rest of us have light blue- my Mom has light blue and my Dads are light hazel with barely a hint of green.

DS right now has dark blue.  I have blue, DH has dark brown.  DH's family all has brown, but his dad is adopted, so we don't quite know what is coming into the mix on that end... My dad has Brown, but everyone else in my family has blue, so we'll see...We're both hoping he stays blue.  My Husband is half portugese, so the darker skin with blue eyes would be really pretty.

  • DH and I both have blues, so she will as well. Will be interesting to see which style they go with, mine have hazel flecks and DHs rings of blue.

Dd has the rings now. DS had rings until about 18 mos but now has mine.

DS1 has stunning bright blue eyes and I'm hoping that DS2 has the same eyes. DH and I both have blue eyes so I am pretty sure that he will have blue eyes too. Although my mom has green eyes and it would be kinda neat to have that pop up randomly.

  • I have hazel eyes. DH has blue and my dad had blue. So we have a 50% chance of having blue eyes babies. DD1 was born with dark blue eyes. Now at 18m they're somewhere between dark blue and grey with some brown flecks. I'm still not convinced they'll stay that way. DD2 also born wih dark blue eyes but they seem to lighten up a bit more than DD1. Pedi says that brown eyes usually turn by 3-4m and that the other colors take longer to set.

  • I have green eyes and DH (who is half Korean) has brown. All three of our boys have been born with brown eyes. DS 2 has them along with the same blonde hair I had as a toddler.

  • Dd still has blue eyes and they're getting bluer. Me and dh both have hazel. I'm assuming hers will change to hazel. All I need is dh thinking she's the milk man's baby (that's a joke). My grandma and uncle have blue eyes so of she did end up with them that's where I am thinking they would come from but that is so rare I highly highly doubt it.

    It's a BOY

  • DH has blue eyes and I have light - medium brown eyes. DS1 has hazel eyes that appear green - blue sometimes and green - brown others. With ds1, his eye color only really became constant at about 2 years. My mom keeps saying they'll darken to brown as my brother's did when he reached his teens.

I think this one will have brown or hazel as well due to the fact that his eyes sometimes appear brown from the side.

I'm pretty sure 2 people with green eyes (and not hazel green) can only have a green eyed child

Actually, there is a 25% chance of having a blue, or brown eyed child assuming those colors are within the family background. There is both a dominant, and recessive allele expressed in the green eye color - Gg the big G being dominant, and the little g being recessive. When you cross the two, about 75% of the time you get green- GG *or Gg and 25% of the time you will get both recessive genes- gg, causing the child to have another eye color. ;) Genes can also skip a generation, making it possible for the child to inherit a grandparent's eye color instead, and so on.
