Clean home = bad for baby?

This article came up in my usual morning news. Β It's definitely interesting and I see how it could make sense... but cockroaches? Count me out...

  • I grew up on a farm and was around allergens all the time.Β  The house was clean, but I spent a lot of time in the barn.Β  I'm allergic to a lot!Β  I'm calling BS on this.

Huh. Those are some interesting findings. I'd rather my kids have asthma than have roaches crawling all over the place though.
My thoughts exactly - I get the whole don't disinfect everything all the time. Β Roaches are taking it way too far though. Yuck.

  • Roaches is too far, I don't dust every day but we vacuum every day or every other, the dog sheds a lot and I hate seeing her fur all over, I think there's a balance between sterile and downright filth.

  • Have you seen the size of the roaches we get in south Florida?? No thank you.Β
  • Well, I guess my baby is gonna be super healthy.

  • It still means that 59 percent of children (the majority) in the study without allergies grew up in households lacking allergens and bacteria.
DH and his sister grew up in a filthy house and both have wicked allergies.Β

  • I've always been against the whole super-hygenic movement because I think that DOES contribute to allergies later in life HOWEVER I'm not going to let my kids be exposed to filth, just a healthy level of dust & dander.Β

This brings me back to a discussion my husband and I have often,Β  Any time you watch a 90s era or earlier movie the homes look like real homes that have been lived in.Β  You would be comfortable walking into the house and flopping on the couch because evrything is NOT "just so".Β  I think "modern" television/movies reflect this super-hygenic movement because the houses typically look sterile and not lived in at all.Β  90s kids were a pretty healthy group because their houses were lived in.Β  Sorry for rambling, my brain has had trouble putting two words together lately, nevermind multiple sentences.

  • I'm not going to change my housecleaning habits in the off chance it will help with allergies. Pretty sure if my house is filthy enough to get cockroaches my child will have health problems worse than allergies.

  • Parasitic worms are better than cockroaches for preventing allergies :)
