Pregnancy insomnia, anyone?

Last week I was so tired that I was falling asleep on the couch while my kid was in his room napping. Apparently, my body has switched gears because last night, I tossed and turned until 6 am when I finally fell asleep. I slept for 2 hours but had to get up for the day at 8. The weird thing is that I'm really not terribly tired - not that I have a ton of extra energy, but I was able to sit through childbirth class and a memorial service without falling asleep. Anyone else suffering with me? This is not something I had an issue with in my first pregnancy, so this is all new territory for me.

Re: Pregnancy insomnia, anyone?

  • I haven't slept well during either pregnancy. Now i have quite the pillow setup to try to get comfy but it's all wrong when i need to change positions so i have to wake up enough to move everything & then can't get back to sleep.

  • I suffered from pregsomnia in the beginning and the end last time. Have a feeling it is happening the same way again.

  • I go through phases of it. I'll usually sleep but wake up dozens of times uncomfortable. Then the next week I'll sleep like a dream and feel great.

  • Definitely had it last night. Kept waking up to go to the bathroom then couldn't fall back asleep. My hips kept hurting too, so that didn't help.

I fall asleep fine, but about 2-3 hours later I wake up to turn over usually because my arms or hips hurt, and I have to move all the pillows and get
Comfortable again. I toss and turn for the rest of the night. My poor DH, I'm waking him up also when I turn because it isn't a graceful feat, lol

PS- I find that I am most comfortable on my stomach - I'm a stomach sleeper anyway. I've found that if I pile up the pillows under my leg that is bent up (I sleep in the runners position), I am almost on my side, but not quite, and my stomach is supported. I sleep better in this position - for longer periods of time.

  • I've got it....I think for the most part it is because my back is killing me and I can't get comfortable.  I bought one of those body pillows at BB&B yesterday but I think it made it worse.  And it just took up too much space in the bed.

This is me too...although without the pillows. I tried pillows for a little while and I was getting too hot in the middle of the night. I'm already freezing out DH with how low I like the a/c at night, so I don't think I can lower it anymore. I'll have to try the pillows again because I am getting more uncomfortable lately.

I don't know if it's insomnia or just discomfort or weird dreams waking me up. Of the 8 hours I spent in my bed last night, I probably spent about 4 of them asleep.

However, I think one of the problems is the anxiety dreams I keep getting. Like last night, I had a dream that I forgot to enroll my child for kindergarten and hurriedly ran to the elementary school to take care of it and I got through the whole process and then someone reminded me that I was still pregnant and was 5 years too early, but for some reason this still stressed me out enough to be up for the next hour.

  • Mine comes and goes. I either sleep like a rock or hardly at all. Luckily my DH sleeps like the dead (great now, not so much when baby cries...) so I don't keep him up, but I'm pretty sure I annoy the hell out of my dog. Haha!

  • I'll go like 5 days with not being able sleep like I'll just crash hard. Usually I can't sleep because I can't get comfortable and when I do I have to pee. I've tried the body pillows and they just don't work for me. Luckily though I have a lot of energy so it's evening out that I can function as a normal person most days.
  • I can fall asleep very easily, but when it comes to staying asleep I struggle after my first wake up. I usually have to pee several times throughout the night and then struggle to get comfortable again. Also, once DH gets up in the morning I find it VERY hard to go back to sleep since my brain starts thinking and I can't turn it off.

  • Put me on list for being one of the ladies that doesnt have an issue falling asleep but have a hard time staying asleep if I get up.

I usually get up one or 2 times a night to pee, and if I do that, then it takes me about an hour to fall back asleep.

    For sure tired these days.

  • Like PP I toss and turn at night and then am wide awake around 6:30am. The best days are when I can get two naps in to make up for crappy sleeping. In the first tri I was sleeping until 9-10 am with a solid night of sleep, but since I've tapered off my sleeping pill I wake up if I am slightly uncomfortable or have to pee. I use pillows under my belly, right behind my back and in between my knees and that usually helps my comfort level. I, too, tried an U-shaped pillow and it was so bulky I couldn't get comfortable. Hope everyone gets some much needed rest!!

  • I had pretty bad insomnia before pregnancy, and it has gotten really bad this week. I was up until 6 am last night and only slept about an hour. My dr said I can take Tylenol pm but it doesn't do much.

I'm worried that BFing won't happen if I have to go back on sleep meds once LO is here.
  • Sleep? What is that? Gah!! It's drivinge crazy. I've been waiting for this and here it is. I probably get around 4-5 hours of very broken sleep, can't fall asleep, can't stay asleep. When DH gets up for work it takes hours to fall back asleep sometimes. ( he works first and I work second.) I miss sleep.
