Question about Fifths disease

I am going to check with my Dr. in the morning, but I figured I would start here tonight since you all are so knowledgeable. My mom works in a preschool and one of her students was diagnosed with Fifths disease this afternoon. She was going to come and visit this weekend, but I just got off the phone with her and she is not sure she should come because of her exposure. She is concerned that she could be a carrier. From what I quickly searched online, it doesn't seem like it is a real problem in the second half of pregnancy. Do any of you have any experience with this or know of any reason she should not come? I will check with the doctor in the morning but I don't want to keep cleaning tonight if she shouldn't come :) Thanks for reading!

I actually work in a daycare and a few of the children in the school are not immunized, so I know I have to be prepared.
Here is a link to the CDC about fifths disease and pregnancy.

I would call your Dr and ask to be safe, but you should be fine!

Oh! When I called my doctor about un-immunized children in my workplace he just said make sure that you are always conscious of washing your hands :) common sense but sometimes we forget the little things.
  • @FamousEa‌ thank you. I am sorry for your loss. She feels like she should stay home unless my dr says otherwise. I also work with children and I know I have been exposed to a lot of things this winter and spring. Thinking I will play it safe this time though. Thanks again!

  • I am a teacher and received an email from a parent that one of my students who I work with closely was diagnosed with fifths. I called my dr and they had me come in for a blood test to check for immunity. It turns out that at some point in the past I must have had it and not known. Apparently this is pretty common.
I would contact your dr but I doubt there would be any issue with your mom as a carrier unless she is exhibiting symptoms. My doctor also told me that if, by chance, I hadn't been immune then the risk was still pretty minimal after the first tri.
I hope this gives you some comfort. I was pretty freaked out when the parent first called me, but it seems like perhaps it isn't as scary as I initially thought!

Thank you. I was reading her the info from the site, but she is more nervous than me about it! :)

    No problem!
My mom would be the same way! She gets so nervous about things like that.

Thank you. I imagine when we work so closely with children, we are exposed to things we sometimes and don't even realize. Glad everything was ok with you!

My son currently has fifth disease or roseola right now. It's a long story about why we aren't sure as to which one and I won't bore with details. Op- What did your dr. Say? I'll be calling the obgyn or gp on Monday to ask for them to test my antibodies for both diseases. For those that have been tested did you do it through the obgyn or GP?

  • @TheFutureMrs.O‌ My Dr. said that it is a respirarory illness and as long as we weren't sneezing or spitting in each others face it should be fine. She said to just wash hands frequently. I hope your son feels better soon!

  • My boys have both had Roseola. Roseola isn't common in adults at all
  • Thanks @BeckyH05‌. Damn it. My son seriously sneezes in my face at least once per day. And when he was contagious I would have never even known to stay away. He's only 1 so he doesn't know better. Going to def call dr. First thing tomorrow. Thanks again!

  • My DS2's school was convinced he might have had it a couple weeks ago.  Because most adults are immune already and I have two kids who have been in classes around other kids for the last 5 years, my OB was not overly concerned.  I could have gone in for an immunity test, but decided it wasn't worth it.
Your mom is probably immune from being around kids already.
