Non-chew heartburn remedy?

Everything is giving me heartburn these days, and I hate the way tums and Mylanta/Maalox taste. Is there a non-chew pill form for tums or Mylanta or Maalox? I'ven gotten the go-ahead from my Dr. to take something stronger, but don't want to if I don't have to.

  • I tried everything my last pregnancy, zantac was the only thing that would work and my heardburn was horrible! so far so good with this LO. Some nausea but no heartburn so far! knock on wood!

I've heard of using apple cider vinegar to alleviate heartburn. Here's one site on it:

I'll put it in a smoothie, as I've read of other good benefits for taking it.

I haven't tried it on heart burn yet - good luck with whatever you try/find!

I was feeling guilty about taking Pepcid AC, since I'd like to try to avoid Category B drugs, but I may go back to it.
  • They used to make a liquid Maalox (mint or cherry flavored( that I sucked down my entire first pregnancy, but I haven't been able to find it recently.  They possibly could have taken it off the shelf :-(

  • most medications are category B or C.  i have GERD and switched from omeprazole (prilosec) to zantac because omeprazole is category C and zantac is only B.  it works great.  i'm thinking of making the switch permanent.

  • If its the chalkiness you don't like I know tums makes a chew that's kinda like a starburst. And there is another brand that makes a fruit chew that looks like a fruit mentos
  • Tums didn't help me, but pepcid worked great!

  • Yup, my doctor prescribed me famotidine, it worked for a while until it got REALLY bad, then she prescribed nexium (it was too expensive even with insurance at the time so I just sucked it up with th pepcid, hoping it's not as bad this time around).

Thanks, all! I'll look for the chew kind of tums. I think it's the sweet artificial flavor that I don't like, but maybe it's the chalkiness too. There was some kind of recall on liquid Maalox and Mylanta, but I was able to get a store brand. I did nothing for me yesterday, but definitely helped this morning.
