Trouble TTC

Preseed and ovulation kits

Has anyone on here used preseed and ovulation kits and it had a good outcome or they know someone that used them to get pregnant? Me and my dh have been trying for a year and a half. It's determined that is somewhat of a mfi, since my dh has nerve damage in his groin. He had surgery to correct that in March. Anyways, because of the nerve damage, I think the problem is infrequency. I want to try preseed and ovulation kits, but the hubby wants to just start clomid again for me and go at it.... And I'm so frustrated!!!! So know I don't know what to do, and I really frustrated... Sorry for the long post

Re: Preseed and ovulation kits

  • If you are not certain that you have a good picture of when you ovulate each cycle (which shouldn't just be based on the average of 14 days), you may gain insight by adding OPKs to BBT temping.

I agree with PP that an RE might help in this situation. An RE could probably do any remaining tests to make sure you're not missing any dealbreakers and then recommend treatment. With MFI, using Clomid or other meds in conjunction with IUI has a much higher success rate, for example.

PS - Beautiful wedding photos! So classic. :)

  • Welcome. Sorry to hear of the nerve damage. Did your DH have a semen analysis to diagnose the MFI? There's a huge spectrum of MFI, sometimes it's really significant and sometimes less significant in that you can overcome it with good management of the woman's cycle. OPKs help you predict when you might ovulate, but it is possible to get +OPKs and still not ovulate. Using them along with temping and charting would be better, but I suck at both temping and charting so no advice there. Preseed and other "fertility friendly" lubricants are probably just an advertising gimmick IMO. My RE actually told me NOT to use preseed, that nothing or plain vegetable oil (can't remember what type) would be gentler on sperm. I figure that the people who had "success" with these lubricants probably didn't really need them, they just needed more patience. Clomid for you, if unmonitored (by ultrasound and/or bloodwork) could be risky, or at best just a waste if there are other issues not diagnosed in you or your DH. There's a lot of info and support on this board so again, welcome (hope you find success soon) and keep reading and asking questions and we'll help wherre we can.

  • If you haven't done anything other than good old fashioned sex when you were in the mood, then the OPK and preseed is a start.  We started those after about 6 months of no success.  You can also start temping.  The TTC board has a good newbie link at the top where you can learn more.

But if you've been trying for over a year, I would also recommend to see and RE.  Even if you don't feel ready or comfortable with any treatment, they can run some more tests to be sure there isn't anything else you would need to do.  Before we did treatments, my RE also had me go in periodically before I ovulated to do a sonogram and check the size and progression of my follicle.  He was able to code it as a regular doctor visit, so I liked being able to get that extra reassurance beyond what OPKs and preseed do.

I hadn't heard an RE say not to use preseed, so that's interesting...but every RE is different.  Mine said that if we ever did use a lube, to use preseed.  But just a heads up that a little bit goes a LONG way.  Otherwise, it's a big ol' mess!

  • I'll go more into our issues for you guys so you have a better picture. I have been tracking for the last 2 and half years (dh was deployed to Afghanistan when I started) and my cycles are all over the place. The range on a normal scale from 23 to 33 days. But I had a 44 and a 52 day cycle last year, one because of stress and the other one was hormonal. My dh was only home for 11 months between Afghanistan and his next deployment. Which we tried that whole time. He then was sent back early from his most recent deployment last year because of the nerve damage. We had a SA done before he left for the deployment and it was fine. Since he is active duty, we both see military docs on base. I've just seen a infertility specialist, not a RE yet. They won't send me to a RE until we try for a couple months in clomid. They have done tests (can't remember what they did, because they did it a year ago) on me and everything is coming back fine. When I went back to the infertility specialist after dh came home, but before the surgery and he wanted me to do clomid and opk. Dh hasn't been diagnosed per say with MFI, but he has had 3 surgeries in his groin area and when he doesn't want to do dtd, we don't because his groin hurts,. If that makes any sense. But we haven't been trying since the surgery, so he can recover. But yesterday I was talking to dh about what to do when we start trying again and all he wants to do is the stupid pill!!!

Well, even if you take Clomid, you'll have to either have sex or your husband will have to produce a sample for an IUI. So, if your husband isn't ready to be sexually active, there's no point in you taking Clomid. Also, it sounds like you really don't want to take Clomid. If that's the case, you might want to talk to your husband about other things you want to make sure you try before dedicating yourself to a Clomid cycle. Good luck!

  • I feel ya on the deployment issue:/. I don't know if your dh tdy's often like mine, but it definitely makes things extra difficult. I've only recently started using pre seed, and have a love hate relationship with opk's. So I'm no help there. But good luck!

Snegde, I'm not against it and I don't have concerns. I just rather try more natural things before medication. I've only taken clomid once and I was fine. But all we have been doing to try to get pregnant is dtd for a year and half, with the exception of one round of clomid right before he left for his most recent deployment. My thought is why mess with nature when we could possibly get pregnant using opks. But dh is against it once we do start trying again (which I hope is in the near future, 'cause my clock is ticking and we want a large family)....
