Guest room + house hunting

Mamas! I have a question about your dream guest room set up. We will be house hunting soon and part of our life (for better or for worse) includes my inlaws visiting on the regular. Right now our guest room is too close for comfort - right between my room and the kids rooms. It drives me crazy (I got a text at 11pm last night asking if my toddler was ok because they heard him cry. Um thanks, I'm on top of it.

Honestly, my dream set up would be a separate nanny flat/ guest house above the garage (or down the street, haha) - but then I realized if we went out for a night it wouldn't be very easy for them to watch out kids. Do you think a basement option with its own bathroom would be the best? What works for you?

Also, anything else you love/hate/recommend for buying a family home? We are property virgins! We won't move for another year but I'm starting to daydream. What's on your dream-house wish list?

Re: Guest room + house hunting

  • Right now we have 4 rooms upstairs, each on a separate corner of the house. There is an open landing in the middle. Right now the guest room is adjacent to our room. In an ideal world it would be on the opposite corner and have its own bath.

We have a two story house with a guest room downstairs and all of our bedrooms upstairs. While I wouldn't buy another two story house for other reasons it is the best set up for us so guests can have privacy on the whole first floor.

  • We've got 4 bedrooms around an open landing for us, DH's study, and the kids. Our guest room is down the hall, along with the kids bathroom (only tub in our house). The guests get the back of the house, along with the servant staircase, so as not to disturb our littles.

  • I think that having a bathroom in the master bedroom is the greatest thing in the world! Also, think about where you spend your time the most. We didn't really care about a fancy kitchen or bathrooms, but wanted a large living room and a big yard for the fur babies.

  • We have a split level, wl2 bedrooms and a bathroom on each level. Guest room is downstairs and has its own bathroom, but our bathroom upstairs is shared with the kids' room and the main bathroom when we have friends over for parties. Not ideal.
I do like having the guest room on a separate floor from the rest of our bedrooms. I also wish that we had all the kids' rooms together on the top floor; right now our kids share a room because I don't feel comfortable putting the 2 yr old alone downstairs. 3 up, 1 down would be ideal..

I dream of having a guest house. If it's on the same property they can come watch the kids even until the middle of the night.

Try to find laundry on the first floor rather than in the basement. What a difference. And as nice as full open concept is, I think it's rough to live with- if there is a mess anywhere, you can see it from everywhere.
