Babies on the Brain

How do you balance FT work and being a new mom?

Alright I'm a newbie...definitely have "baby on the brain" though so I figured this would be the place to go. My husband and I are thinking of TTC within the next year and our biggest concern at the moment is how we are both going to balance working full time and being new parents. We are both extremely active and busy people. What do you (or others you know) do to keep a balance? How do you make it work?

  • It's tough, but you eventually get into a rhythm.

I will say as she has gotten older it has gotten easier, as she's able to play by herself and entertain her self for a few minutes while I am getting ready for work and when I first come home.

  • I get myself and my daughter ready the night before. I do a lot of crock pot meals through out the week. It's easier when she was a baby. She would naturally wake up around 15-20 mins before my alarm went off for the day. I would nurse her or give her a bottle and then start to get ready for the day.  I got lucky with my babysitter because she prefers to feed breakfast to the kids.
  • Crock pots are like a magical invention sent from the gods! Seriously, crockpot+pinterest= amazing food!

I cook almost exclusively with my crock pot. We do once a month meal prep and then just pull a bag out of the freezer in the morning while I'm getting ready, dump it in the pot, and go.
I definitely want to know about all your recipes. :|

  • It's not super easy, but doable & worth it. We have family help most days, but also a daycare center 2 mornings per week. This is so we have a full-time option if the grandparents arent available. We're lucky to have family, but could do it with DD in daycare full time.
. It does get better/easier as kids get older. Also, it's OK to pop them in front of the TV for Sesame Street so you can blow dry your hair!
. Really, you will get into a rhythm & then it will change as your kid grows, you'll adapt & repeat till they move out....;)

  • We share responsibilities completely and also plan the week ahead.  We have a cleaning service, so we never have to clean.  We don't worry about elaborate meals at all during the week.  And after DD was born, we built a home gym, so I get my workouts done here at home.

Our DD went to daycare in the hospital where I worked at the time, so I always took care of daycare, but it was so convenient.   Now we split responsibilities as both our workplaces are 5 mins to her pre-school.

I will say that it was super hard the first year.  DH is a military pilot, so he's gone a lot.  I actually hired two mother's helpers to come over Mon, Tues and Wed evenings (not at the same time, of course) to just help with DD and make it easier for me.  It was the best move I ever made.  The two girls adore DD and still babysit for us regularly.

Things are really easy now that DD is 3.  We're actually trying for #2 which is crazy to me, b/c I was so anti-more kids during her first year.

  • I take child to day care in the morning, go to work, come home. How else do you think people make it work?
