Any Hand, Foot, and Mouth experts?

@mrsjenni‌ ?

Found out yesterday LO has been exposed to HFM. Little boy from his daycare (who loves to play with LO) was diagnosed yesterday.

My question is this: if LO isn't showing symptoms, is he still able to pass the virus if he has it? Planning to go to church but won't if we could be contagious.

CDC didn't have very good information on incubation periods.

Luke is 5 months old, I'm not actually pregnant as it shows (obviously). The Bump gods have yet to allow my signature change to go through.

  • I worked at a daycare center and a child had hfm, I never got it (probably had it when I was younger) but my son did get it. He was about 9-10 months old.

    That's the only real experience I've had with it. Usually they say that by the time they are actually showing symptoms they are no longer contagious.

  • Good to know. Thanks for the info! I think I will just keep him separated from everyone today, just to be safe.

  • But what about before symptoms show? That's the biggest part I can't find.

    I'm still going to keep him away from other kids. From my readings, they seem to need to have physical contact with body fluids to transmit anyways. Now I'm just curious about this though.

  • Honestly - at my daycare when a kid has HFM they put up a sign and notify all parents.  The school is really good at sanitizing the center so while Alice has had classmates get HFM numerous times she hasn't ever got it (she'll be 3 this August).  I wouldn't keep your LO in isolation from others, but just keep a close eye on him to see if he has any symptoms.
  • Thank you, ladies!

  • Dd was we exposed 2 weeks ago. By my nephew. Who had no symptoms when we saw him and when we saw him is when he gave it to my other nephew/ niece. Two days later is when he had symptoms and the day or two after his symptoms started is when my other nephew started a fever. He didn't get his spots for two days after the fever. But yes they are contagious before symptoms.

    Dd thank fully get not get it, even after a hug from said cousin. I was definitely nervous about it n

  • Just seeing this now, but Reid had it last summer at around 10 months or so and it was terrible.  If your LO has been exposed, then they could be contagious and pass it to others.  It spread like wildfire through my mom's daycare... all the kids got it.  I was about 18w PG at the time and thankfully did not get it.

    GL mama!
