Breastfeeding

Inverted nipple

Four weeks into BFing, I'm still experiencing major pain on one of my nipples while DD latches. This side is also inverted but the LC's have always said her latch looks great so we seem to have gotten over that hump. Even manual manipulation makes it burn/sting. During the feed, it tends to get better but I'm still feeling a very hard tugging. Have anyone had a similar experience??

I'm still a little sensitive on my other side but it's healing finally so I'm feeling more hopeful!

Re: Inverted nipple

  • I should also add that I was treated for Thrush and finished the course of meds after symptoms disappeared. I sterilize my breast shells and pump parts regularly and use APNO. I air dry as much as possible and change my breast pads constantly.

    TIA!

  • I'm sure others have better advice for you than what I can give, I just want to say I sympathize. I also have one inverted nipple and I had a difficult time as well. While the inverted nipple actually reversed itself after pumping a couple months, my nipple pain never improved, and mine was in both nipples. My LC determined the cause was both my baby's severe latch and I had very sensitive nipples. Unfortunately I wasn't able to nurse and ended up a reluctant EPer.

I hope it improves for you, good luck!

I totally sympathize! I had 2 inverted nipples and my son had tongue tie, which was clipped at 3.5 weeks. I used to pump before every nursing session just enough to draw them out, but after fixing his tongue tie, they reversed themselves and BFing has been so much easier and enjoyable ever since (6.5 months and counting). I would try pumping to draw yours out, and if it is painful, you might need to try different flange sizes.
