What to read?

I downloaded the library app on my phone and read a couple books. I have a hold on my next 2 choices. What good books have you read lately? I need something to read while I wait.

My taste is all over the place. I love Stephen King, GoT, historical fiction and non-fiction. 1 of the holds is on TFIOS.

  • Yep, I've read it! Actually, I think there was a new one I never got to. Off to go check. Thanks!
  • Anything by Anne Rice, or Dean Koontz (since you like King).  The Chelsea Handler books are great except for the last one, if you want something funny.

Books I'm about to read but haven't yet (rereading Harry Potter first) Brain on Fire (non-fiction) and Rules of Civility (Romance novel set in the late 1930's).

  • Mystery (Blue Rose trilogy) by Peter Straub

If you like short stories, Twisted and More Twisted by Jeffery Deaver are entertaining. Each story has a great plot twist.

  • I love anything by Philippa Gregory. She mainly writes historic fiction about Tudor England. But she's an amazing author!

  • I read too much trashy (and really good) romance novels. I should really expand my library.

I love romance novels too. There is a lady on the nest who writes some I like. Her name is Macy Beckett.

  • @amdecker1016‌ , love Philippa Gregory! I'm about to finish "The Boleyn Inheritance" (tonight hopefully) and I just want to read all of her books! She makes the characters so juicy and interesting...

When OP said she liked historical fiction, this is where my mind immediately went.

  • The most recent book that really blew me away was Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. It's about a family and culture during the days leading to Hurricane Katrina. Very moving and well-written, with lots of literary devices, allusions and what not. It was impressive.

Have you tried the Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie? There is a whole series about he girl, Flavia De Luce, who is extremely precocious, loves chemistry and solves mysteries. I promise it's adult-appropriate.

Kate Morton has some amazing books combing romance, history, legacies and mystery all wrapped into one package. The Forgotten Garden and House at Riverton were my favorites.

The Time Travelers Wife is a great love story.

If you like Phillippa Gregory, try Alison Weir who also writes historical fiction about Henry the eighth, Elizabeth and the Princes in the Tower. She also has some non-fiction.

For something lighter, Delirium, about a society who views love as a disease (trilogy), the Cassandra Clare series, Mortal Instruments, Anything by Ann Brashares. Rainbow Rowell books (Eleanor and Park, Fangirl), Jillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Dark Places, Sharp Objects. She's very grim and gritty).

    Hope that helps!

  • The Anita Blake vampire hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The first book is called Guilty Pleasures, :D

The Sentinels of New Orleans series by Suzanne Johnson is a new favorite of mine.

Anything by H.P. Lovecraft is worth a read.
  • I'm currently reading the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher (Dresden File's author).  It's good.

  • @TiffanyBerry I love  Jim Butcher. I met him a few times when the first Dresden Files books came out.
  • If you like Stephen King, you might like Night Film by Marisha Pessl. It's more of mystery than a horror story, but it had a creepy vibe that I enjoyed.
