Am I the only one who's LO doesn't sleep forever?

I swear every post I read or every parent I talk to says their kid sleeps 6, 8, 10+ hrs at night. Are you kidding me? My LO is 9 wks and I do dances at 1am when he slept a 4 hr stretch. 4 hrs is the longest we have gotten and that's only happened three times. Usually it's 3 hrs for the first stretch, and progressively gets less and less each stretch til morning. :-( I feel like our LO is all alone in this matter and will never improve! I do think moving him to the nursery would help, as I hear everything and probably often pick him up to feed before he is totally awake. Tell me I'm not alone!!!

Re: Am I the only one who's LO doesn't sleep forever?

  • We started getting the longer stretches once we moved LO to her nursery at 7 weeks. We only oh get her if she fusses when we used to get her for every little grunt. She's also learned to fall back asleep on her own. It might be worth a try for you :)
  • Loading the player...
  • This is me!! Actually last night he didn't sleep a stretch longer than 55 minutes. 45...37...it was terrible. So bad that my husband got up twice - he hasn't gotten up since LO was 2 weeks old, when he went back to work. LO is also 9 weeks tomorrow
  • I think moving him to the nursery will help.

  • I don't think you're alone in this. Plenty of us on this board aren't getting 3/4+ stretches at night. Moving LO to the nursery might help but I'd say you're fairly lucky to get at least one 4hr stretch.
  • The longest our LO has gone is 4 hours at 7 weeks, and like you said, every time we put her back down after that she sleeps less, 3 hours, then 2, etc. so you are definitely not alone in this!
  • We are in same boat. DS is 6 weeks. We got a 4 hr stretch one time, and that is it.
  • We usually get 3 hrs, 2 hrs, 2 hrs at 7 1/2 weeks. You're definitely not the only one.
  • I would absolutely move him to the nursery. I don't pick up my son unless he is absolutely awake where he starts fussin. If he is just grunting he stays where he is because usually he goes right back to sleep. We get one long stretch early in the night then 2 short stretches but I know he usually grunts for awhile before he gets up from his long stretch and his eyes never open until he starts fussing
  • What are LO's naps like during the day? My baby takes 20-30 minute naps all day, with one 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon and then 4-5 hour stretches at night. She's 10 weeks, and the 20 minute naps during the day/ longer stretches at night just recently started.
  • You're not alone, it's totally normal, move her to the nursery.
Also, there is LOTS of potential for all these babies who sleep forever to regress to shorter stretches.

This happened to us. She was only getting up once at night and then slept through the night for a week straight. Now she's getting up two or three times a night. She's nine weeks now.

  • Mine is 2 months today. He hasn't slept longer than 2 consecutive hours since birth. Including at night. He's still feeding every 2 hours (maybe 3.. but of course doesn't sleep the whole time in between) and he's up like clock work to eat no matter what time it is.

    So jealous :(

DS sleeps 2 or 3 hours stretches through the night generally... on the rare occasion he's surprise me with a 4 hour stretch but that really is rare. We co-sleep though, and I know that has a lot to do with it. DD was the same. The benefit, though, is that I literally just roll over and put a boob in his mouth... I barely have to wake up. I just read a study about co-sleeping vs. having baby in their own room and it showed that when they're in their own room they sleep longer stretches but take a lot longer to get back to sleep when they wake in the middle of the night. Honestly, I'd prefer a bunch of mini-wakings than having to bounce baby around the house for hours in the middle of the night.

Anyways, I wouldn't stress. Like I said, DD was the same and she's now the best sleeper EVER. It started around 8 months and I'm still a little wary of telling other moms about how great of a sleeper she is, haha.

  • I bed share and honestly have no idea how often DS wakes because we both go back to sleep so quickly. I don't think he even really wakes up. I just can't deal with endlessly trying to bouce/walk/rock/etc a baby back to sleep multiple times a night. Maybe consider trying it if nothing else seems to work.

Luckily when he "wakes" if you wanna call it that, he's kind of half awake, feeds, then I change his diaper in which his eyes are still closed. In the rare event he wakes during diaper change by the time I walk him back to the pnp he is out again. Lord I don't know what I would do if he was wide awake! Hope that doesn't happen if I move him to the nursery! As far as naps, they vary, minimum 30 minutes, max 2 hrs. Lately a lot of them have been 50 minutes. Like I said, I'm not complaining, I'm very happy with 2-3 wakes per night, cuz it used to be 5-6 and that was painful!! Just blows my mind when I see some posts saying their kid slept 11 hrs .... I would be poking my kid by 6 hrs to make sure he were ok lol.
  • You are 100% not alone. I just posted yesterday "sleep suggestions" because my kid sleeps 20 min. and then is good for the day. She thinks she is a party animal.
  • LO sleeps with me and I get 7-8 hour stretches. What helps me is when I notice her moving around I reposition her or put her Wubbanub in her mouth to get her back to sleep before she fully wakes up.
  • My little girl sleeps about 9 hours a night but in waiting for something to change.

She sleeps better than my 4 and 2 year old. So it's obviously nothing I'm doing.

  • My LO is in the nursery and the longest stretch I've gotten is 4.5 hr. He has taken a 5.5 hr "nap" in the afternoon...and that is frustrating BC he gets really fussy if I try to keep him awake during the day...sigh. He is 6 wks.
  • There's such a wide range of normal!!

  • LO has been sleeping in her nursery for weeks while swaddled, bottle of BM fed, white noise, and a fan running... She's 8.5 weeks and has never gone more than 3.75 hours. Every 2/2.5 hours is her average and it usually takes her an hour to go back down.

Consistent 4 hour stretches would seem like a miracle!

This. I don't go in until I hear crying. I would drive myself crazy getting up when I heard grunting and by the time I walked 10 steps into his room, he was asleep. We get one 3-4 hour stretch and then every 2 hrs typically. He sleeps more during the day if we are out and he is in his stroller/ carrier. At home it's anywhere from 1-4 hr naps.

  • I had posted before...LO is a very inconsistent sleeper. Two nights ago (no bath) he slept no more than 1 hour at a time. Now, with bath, we just woke up from a 5 hr stretch!!! I was just wondering if any of you, who have LOs that aren't sleeping well, have used Johnson's bedtime bath soap or a similar product. It seems to make the difference. No bath...short stretches all night. Using the soap, or possibly just taking a bath before bed gives us one long stretch of 4-5 hours. The rest usually are shorter after that but it's an improvement!!
  • My LO sleeps with us (we have a one bedroom). He sleeps a lot during the day. At night he usually wakes every 2 to 3 hours. I feed him, change him and most of the time he'll go right back to sleep.

@Lindss1209‌ My LO seems to sleep a longer stretch after a bath, too! He did 5.5 hrs last night and he is usually only sleeping 4 hrs his first stretch. First time we bathed him before bed we got 6 hours. Could be coincidence but oh well!
