Intro

Hi gals! I'm currently 8w4d with twins after our fifth ivf cycle! Looking forward to getting to know you all...I've been lurking since we found out at 5w3d. I have my first question...is it really necessary to have an SUV or van or is a car okay? We have an accord but need to buy a second practical car. What works best for you guys?
TTC 2 years- Me and DH (28) with (severely) low sperm count- less than 40 total (last 2 SA showed only 5 and 6 sperm each)

IVF #3: ER 12/1 and only 2 retrieved.  1 fertilized with ICSI.  Was planning on transferring one fresh and one frozen....fresh was only 14 cells at day 5...CANCELLED and devastated due to 5cm blood filled cyst in ovary and blood in uterus.
IVF #4: Antagonist protocol with endometrial scratch day one of stims.  ER 4/21: 6R/4M/3F- transferred 2 beautiful blasts (5dt) and one was hatching!  No frosties but hoping we won't need it!  Beta 5/4/14- 444(8dp5dt), Beta #2 10dp5dt 1002!  THIS HAS GOT TO BE IT!!!!!!!!!!  First US 5/15 we saw two of the most beautiful gestational and yolk sacs I have ever seen!

    Welcome!

We considered a car but was having issues finding on with enough trunk room for the double stroller. I was mostly concerned for that to be honest :)

We ended up with a small SUV.

I am sure a car is fine if you aren't planning big outings and such.

  • Welcome and congratulations! We live in NYC without a car. So can't help you much there.

  • Congrats! Mine aren't here yet so I can't actually answer this question. We traded our two door civic in for a ford escape though because there was no way rear racing seats would've even fit in our old back seat.

    Congrats!

DD is 18 months and the twins are due in late July. We have a Jeep. Three seats fit across, but since they are rear-facing it pushes our seats way too close to the dashboard. We're getting a minivan in a few weeks.

Welcome and congrats! Happy to see you over here. We have a small SUV and the stroller takes up most of the cargo space. I cant imagine it would fit in a trunk well. I love my car, but My complaints are the driver cannot scoot back all the way with car seats in (ok for me, but hard for my 6'4" dh) and the middle back seat is also unusable with 2 car seats in. We also have a Dodge Ram extended cab which is awesome for car seats and baby gear, but terrible on gas. We use it for longer trips when DH drives

  • Welcome and congrats!

I'm sure a sedan is doable but you do need a lot if space for their car seats and all their stuff. We have a toddler too so good sized SUV was a must for us. Buy your car seats and stroller and test them out. :)
  • Welcome! The car question depends largely on your lifestyle and how long you expect to use the vehicle. A sedan can definitely work with just two kids, but it will be very cramped and you will likely have trouble fitting a full sized double stroller in the trunk. The biggest cramping issue is when the kids are rear facing (2 years minimum is the recommendation) since the pitch of the car seats will require the front seats be scooted forward...that can be problematic especially if you or your partner are on the tall side. I'd be more inclined to get a bigger vehicle (van or crossover SUV) till the babies are out of rear facing seats.

I generally recommend a minivan over an SUV simply for the convenience factor. Sliding doors make life so much easier, and you definitely want all the help there you can get. We have a minivan because the twins were babies #2 and #3 and it's perfect for our situation. We do a ton of driving since we're in a rural area, so there's lots of loading/unloading and multiple errands on days when we go out of the house.

  • I think an accord would be do able with 2 but I would def look at what car seats fit and how comfortable the driver is with one behind it. I just traded in my 5 passenger SUV because we are expecting twins and have a 2 yr old. We could've probably been ok but we frequently take other people with us places so we wanted the option.

We traded it in for a honda odyssey and I love. The cargo space is great. I can fit 3 across in the middle seat. And the automatic sliding doors are amazing. Plus I love not having to open the door akwardly trying to get DS in and out of his car seat while being pg.

Like pp said it really depends on your lifestyle as what's going to work for you.

    Welcome!

We rent an SUV for road trips when we actually need the space, but my Prius is just fine for every day. The BOB stroller takes up a lot of room and the DSNG takes up about half the trunk space. Besides a diaper bag, I'm not carrying any other stuff, so it's fine. There's room for bags if I am shopping, but I try to avoid that with the twins. I refuse to buy an SUV or a minivan, which is one reason we aren't going to have any more kids. If you do plan on a third, then a sedan probably won't cut it.
