Balance Bike?

Have you bought a balance bike for your LO(s) yet?  If so, which brand did you get and can your LO ride it yet?  I'm debating between a metal one vs wooden one.

What about helmets?  Did you have them fitted first before buying?

Any insights are welcome!

Re: Balance Bike?

  • We just got one for our almost 4 year old. She loves it. It is a strider bike. Our 20 month old (even big for her age) is too small for it. She likes to sit on the seat, but does not understand what to do with it. However, I do think she will figure it out in the next year (closer to age 3). You may want to look into them now with the idea that he or she will use it in the future.

DD got an Early Rider for Christmas when she was 13 months.

She still has the training wheels on it. No helmet but she only uses it inside. It hasn't been a favorite toy to say the least. I wish she'd ride it more bc it's really cute when she does.

My older son outgrew his bike and we took DS2 with when we went shopping. The store employee showed us a balance bike, mostly just to distract DS2. He ended up loving it, but there was no way I was paying over $100 for the Trek brand.

We ended up getting a cheaper brand at Target, but we did buy the Trek helmet.

He rides it maybe a total of 15 minutes a week, usually when big brother is riding his. We do keep it in the garage with the rest of our bikes. So it's not like there's opportunity for him to ride it inside.

  • We bought DD the strider bike as well, and she loves it! She doesn't understand that she can sit down on it at this point still, but walks around with it in between her legs. We have a lazer helmet for her. DH kind of went all out with this purchase... he is hoping to get her into dirtbiking like.. tomorrow. Haha.

@anotherpreggo, the strider bike isn't too big for you DD? I was measuring DS's inseam last night, and he's barely 10".

@cbeanz, love the spherovelo! I was tempted to get it but it is only good for age 1-2. Am considering the toddler-sized Early Rider balance bikes.

  • @pb_bride No it isn't too big! We have the seat lowered as much as it goes, and she can easily sit on it... just chooses not to still. You should look for a bike shop in your area that has them in stores to see how he fits on it before you buy it.

R is is the 20th percentile for height, so I would imagine you wouldn't have an issue.
