Babies: 0 - 3 Months

logging sleep

My baby girl is 7weeks old.  I haven't been worried about logging her sleep because I am home with her until August. My husband is going to stay home with her in August and work nights.. so we don't have to worry about daycare. She has been sleeping pretty well through the night for about 4 weeks (11pm-3am, 3:30-7, 7:30-10am.)

When should we start tracking her sleep and why?

  • WTF? Not necessary. If the kid seems rested then you are good. :|

Some moms get anal & panties twisted over something like sleep that is so beyond their control. I imagine the logging helps them feel like they are doing something proactive.

  • I've never even heard of this. I can see if you're handing off care between home and daycare, you might want to know that he didn't fall asleep fir his afternoon nap, but I don't see a need for a log.

  • I track sleep so that I can figure out WTF baby is doing over a week or two. For example I know from tracking sleep that baby wakes up around 2am and 2pm every day. Other times too but if you could set a clock to the night wake up for milk and a diaper change and she's always awake and cheerful around 2pm. So now I know to invite guests over to visit around 2pm and to expect to have that 2am break In the overnight sleep.

We don't do a schedule, so keeping track of her sleeping gives us an idea of what we can expect in any given day. For example- I'm pretty sure that she's going to stay asleep this morning for at least another hour and a half (possibly up to 3 more hours) so if I wanted to I could take a nap or get some chores done.

But it's really unnecessary overall- especially if you've already got a rythmn going with your naps :)

  • I have an app on my phone that I use to track sleep, nursing, bottles, pumping, and diapers. It definitely isn't necessary, but I am terrible at remembering numbers so it helps a ton! If LO is getting fussy I can look and see what time was her last nap and feed were to help figure out what might be the problem. If I don't mark it on my phone I seriously cannot remember when what happened- mom brain on top of an already terrible memory is a bad combo.

Also, I am not one to put LO on a schedule. But I do like to look for patterns and help her make her own schedule that will be a little more consistent as she is getting older. Having recorded this stuff helps me to do this.

It really depends on what works for you!
