Breastfeeding

Broke my leg and lost my supply :(

I broke my leg about two weeks ago and since then my supply has all but disappeared. My LO is getting about 95% formula now. I talked to my LC this morning and she said by now if I were to regain my milk it would be relactation, which is really difficult. I'm on Mother Love (fenugreek did nothing), the tea, oatmeal, lots of water, pumping, only taken Tylenol for the break. Domperidone is hard to get her and waaaay too expensive. I'm trying to get Reglan but my doctor is reticent to give it to me since I have a history of PPD and they want to be able to monitor me while on it. The only thing I haven't tried is an SNS...but she can only latch with a shield. Can I even use an SNS with a shield? Is it hopeless? I'm not ready to give up. I've made it six months. I want so much to make it a full year.

Re: Broke my leg and lost my supply :(

  • I am very sorry about your broken leg :( Did the LC say why she thought the broken leg was related to your supply loss? Six months is great, momma, don't be hard on yourself!! Have you tried power pumping, to see what you can get?

  • I've been pumping every two hours. My total haul today was 1.5 ounces. I spent a good portion of today crying over it and then I came to the position that it's okay to be done. I'm so scared I'll regret it tomorrow though. I love breast feeding. :(
  • It's definitely ok to be done, you have done a wonderful thing for your LO, by giving her breastmilk for 6 entire months! That's so great!!

I'm sorry this has happened before you were ready, and I'd consider making a trip to another LC to try and figure out what's going on and if there is anything you can do, if you're not ready to be done.

  • Well, amyg got it covered.

I agree with other PP, you did a great job, even if it's over 6 months is great. I am also drying up now and know how difficult and sad it is to see this happening before being ready but you have a happy and healthy baby and I a sure she will be fine with it. She now has that special bond with you and won't be lost.

  • I am sorry to hear that your body stopped before you were ready, six months is nothing to sneeze at though. Congratulations momma, you did good!
