questions to ask at first appointment?

So I called the doctor yesterday to schedule my intake appt expecting it to be several weeks away as I am only 4.5 wks along but I am going Tuesday.

I know I will have plenty of time to ask questions over the next 35 ish weeks but is there anything I should ask on day one?

I am going to ask about the Toxoplasma titers due to my work and possibly about pregnancy risks associated with my job as well (I am a veterinarian).

But anything else?

Re: questions to ask at first appointment?

  • I like to ask how many ultrasounds they do and when. Some doctors are different. What tests they do. If you are on any meds, what is safe for pregnancy. Make sure they are on the same page as you regarding anything that might be important to you like natural birth etc., because if you guys aren't on the same page, the earlier you switch OB's the better.

Good luck with your first appt!

  • thank you @dizzymom1

would it be crazy to ask about hospitals already?

ok thanks.  DH looked at me crazy because I was looking at hospitals this morning, but I go to a satellite clinic to see the OB so I think they have privileges at inconvenient hospitals.  (* with good hospitals closer)

  • I remember seeing you awhile back aggiebug.....like 4 yrs ago on TN. I was only semi active and using another screen name so you woukdn't remember me. Either way.. Hi :)

I plan on mainly sitting back to see what info they give me, ask questions as they come and making a list of things I may think of later to ask as we go along.

I did have my pcp draw my toxo titers while we were ttc ( I'm a vet tech) just to get a sense of what to expect. My doc was completley convinced I would titer positive after growing up at a barn and working in vet med for 13 years. We were both shocked when I got a negative.

So now I violently wash my fruits and veggies and use gloves in cases where I wouldn't in the past, and wear a mask if I need to work with cat feces ( although most of my coworkers who know d/t my avoidance of radiology assume those tasks for me without my asking)

  • thanks sweetdreams! Now you have me curious :) I wouldn't be surprised is my toxo is neg but it would be nice if they were positive and less to worry about.

  • Definitely ask about hospitals! My midwife office has privileges at only a couple hospitals so it is good to know where you will be going.
I second the U/S plans, what they test for, how far past your due date they will induce, and how passionate they are about natural birth, if that is something important to you.

  • Not crazy at all!  :)  My OB delivers at 2 hospitals in our area, so it was good to know which 2 at the very beginning.  I was able to schedule classes and tours of both hospitals to make the best decision about where to deliver.  I also completely agree with making sure you are with an OB who is supportive of the type of delivery you want to have.  My goal was to have a natural childbirth (as long as it was safe to do so), and my OB was supportive of it, which made a big difference.
