Thoughts?

For the last couple months DD has started doing this thing where she bangs back and forth on anything, the couch, her Highchair, her swing, her vibrating chair, the shopping cart, the exersaucer and even on myself when I hold her etc.. Literally anything. If I put her anywhere she just bangs her back/head really hard over and over and over again and she will not stop until I remove her or sometimes she'll stop for a couple seconds if I distract her with something but not for very long.

It's getting to the point where it's becoming dangerous because she's getting really strong and she just keeps smashing her head/back on whatever it is, it's becoming really forceful. I've been trying to discourage the behavior but nothing is working.

Does anyone else's LO do this? Please tell me it's just a phase.. I'm becoming concerned that something is wrong with her. We see her doctor Monday morning and I'm going to bring it up but she likely won't be able to notice a problem since this is the first time bringing it up.

I keep telling myself that she's just being an active baby but I just have never seen another baby act like this it's strange. I wish I could upload a video of it because I'm not sure that I'm explaining myself the best. Anyways before I write a novel I would love to hear some thoughts if anyone has any.

Re: Thoughts?

  • I think DS does this. Is it like she's rocking but she does it hard enough to hit her head? DS does that when I hold him and it hurts my chest. If I hold him further away I'm afraid I'll drop him because he's strong. Now that he can sit alone on the floor or lay on his tummy and scoot, he doesn't do it as much. I always thought he was trying to move like scooting on his butt so he was throwing his whole body into it. I'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing. I would mention it to your pedi though. Good luck.

It is kind of like a rocking back and forth. If I sit her on the floor to play she doesn't do it like she would in her chair but she still can't be trusted because she'll randomly throw herself back. Holding her on my lap she'll slam back and hit my chest with her head and it definitely hurts especially if she does it a few times.

@twolittlewheels‌ the sensory issue is what's coming to mind. I tried explaining that to her dad but he's in the "it's just a phase" boat which I hope he is right.

@dhaueisen‌ she's always been a very active baby and for the first few weeks that's why I wasn't concerned at all, I thought it was cute and that she was just having fun but last night when we went to walmart we put her in the infant seat type shopping cart and it seemed as if she was purposely banging her head back.. A lot of the time she doesn't even smile when doing it and other times she'll do it than smile at us.

  • No, neither of my kids have done that.  I would absolutely bring it up with your pedi, and if you have the ability to video, use it.  It reminds me of an autistic student's behavior I knew when I was in MS (I am NOT diagnosing your LO with ASD or even saying that the girl I knew's head banging was related to her ASD, just tat the image I'm getting from your description is similar to my memory of that girl.)  T&Ps that you get some help!

I did mention autism to her father and to our home nurse but she's not showing any other signs right now. I'm going to keep an eye on her development though in case she starts regressing and showing more signs.

  • My niece did this too. It's quite alarming to watch, my sister in law use to have to cup her head to prevent her from smashing her head against her highchair or stroller. I think she used distraction with her a lot to stop the behavior. She did it more as a fit thing when she got frustrated with something. She was never diagnosed with anything and she's 2.5 now, she just kind of grew out of it. I don't really know too much more about it than that but I would bring it up to your doctor for sure.
  • The nurse just comes to talk about milestones and to help me with any questions I have etc. Autumn hasn't had any developmental concerns at all. Everything else she does all seems normal.. She babbles and smiles, makes eye contact, she rolls everywhere etc.. We did the 9 month assessment and she is right where she should be cognitively and physically. I see her doctor in 3 days so I will most definitely bring in a video for her.
  • Actually now that I think about it, I noticed she's often been resting her head between her legs or on the floor or on her toys, I thought this was strange as well. This started just recently.
  • Kind of like in this photo.. And she'll pop up if I say something but sometimes she'll stay like yang for a little until I say her name.

Desmond does this when he is in his high chair. He only does it when he is super tired though. It may be her way of just taking a little break from playing.

Desmond also used to do the rocking and head banging, but it was only when he was sitting on my lap. He didn't do it much, but I remember wondering what the heck he was doing because it hurt me. He stopped doing it though so maybe it is just a weird baby thing

  • DS recently started doing this in his high chair. He usually seems happy when he does it and I haven't thought much of it until I read this. I just thought it was something he learned how to do and likes practicing it.

  • I have mentioned my nephew to you before. They discovered that he had migraines. I wonder if her head could be hurting.
It could be sensory. Sensory issues could explain the other problems you have with her as well.
I really felt when DS did this it was just because he wasn't mobile. Usually if I moved where he was (ie off my lap onto the floor) he'd stop.
He will sometimes throw himself backwards when sitting on the floor. I put foam tiles down but he sometimes falls off them. It really upsets me.
Talk to your pedi on Monday. Let us know how it goes. Lots of positive vibes your way.
  • He did it today so I got a picture. He just laid his head down in the middle of eating and was spinning his little toy. I think he was just tired. image

  • Thanks for the positive vibes! She's a very very high maintenance fussy baby too so she may have migraines? It could make sense. I'll have to discuss it with her doctor Monday and she what she thinks.

It's funny though because her dad always has said since months and months ago "maybe her head hurts" and constantly that was his go to reason for everything "maybe she has a headache" .. I always responded with why would she have a headache.. But now I'm thinking it definitely could be something along those lines.

So cute! He definitely looks tired. She used to do something like this on her exersaucer and I just figured she was tired of playing and now even after naps she puts her face down on the floor face first and will keep it down like that until I say her name. It's so strange!
  • My DS has banged his head in his high chair a couple of time and when people have been holding him a couple of times. But he does not do it very often or consistently....nor does he do it hard enough to hurt himself therefore I am not concerned about it.  I would mention your situation to your doctor.

  • DD does the flail and head bang but randomly and briefly, like I don't know if it's tired or sensory or what but it's happened here and there with us, too. She also occasionally just lays forward and puts her head down but I think she needs a break when she does that. Hope all goes well at the pediatrician! Keep us posted!
