Icing choice?

Hey ladies...
Trying to practice making L's cake smash cake. Were trying to decide on an icing choice for the top of a giant cupcake, these are just tiny practice cupcakes. Which would you choose... 1..2..or 3. I need help.

  • haha its supposed to be a grass tip or hair. My sister uses it all the time to make sesame street cupcakes so like the hair on cookie monster. She's also used it at easter to make grass with some mini eggs on top. I like it because it looks crazy, but I think I'm leaning towards the spikes. I think it will look really cute over an entire big cake.

  • Haha it is kind of like big roses. We voted it out because she tried to make it look less rosey because he's a boy and we felt it was just an epic fail.

I'm just wondering if number 1 would have enough icing to actually smash or if it would be too flat/not enough icing. Thoughts? I think its the safest bet though......icing should not be this difficult haha

ETA I mean number 3 not number 1. Number one is really thick number three not so much.

  • I think we may have to make one and three as a practice just to see which one we like better. I mean I obviously need to eat more cake haha

  • Thanks @Ciahanna‌ that's exactly what we used for icing so I will have to make sure it's not in the fridge. We used regular icing at first and it just ran everywhere in the heat so we thought buttercream may work better. I hadn't thought about it being too hard.

@mcbush she actually doesn't have any of the really big tips. She said last night that it's going to be her next purchase. Also, do you know any good whipped frosting recipes? The one we used the first time ran in the heat so we had to scrap it.

She went ahead and tried the funky one last night after on the giant cupcake. Were still not 100% either way. Thanks for all your input. Were leaning towards doing number three for his cupcakes now, you girls seemed to overwhelmingly like that one best. Eta not sure why I can't make this photo bigger, I usually upload from my computer.
