Still not saying "Mommy"

So my DD is 17 months old and she still to this day has never said Mommy or Momma.  She knows who I am but just grunts at me if she want's something.  If I say, "Say Mommy", she says "Dada".  It was really cute when she started doing that at 9 months, but now I'm like, "Come on!  Show Mommy some love!"  LOL  She says other words like, Baby, Cold, Pretty, Kitty Cat, Thank You, etc.  But she won't say Mommy.  It makes me kind of sad, and DH rubbing it in my face doesn't help. (He does it in a playful way).

I will say, that I am the only one who gets morning kisses from her every morning without asking, so I think that makes up for it.  I just wondered if any other moms were getting the shaft like me.  :)

Re: Still not saying "Mommy"

  • My DD only says mama if she's upset about something :)

  • No mama here either. I SAH so I think it's because I'm always around so there's no need to call for me.

  • DD just started saying mama consistently in the last month or so. She used to do the same thing you described - saying dada when we asked her to say mama. I also wondered if it's because I SAH so she didn't really have a reason to say my name as much. It secretly bugged me a little, so I was happy when she finally started saying it.

  • DS has been saying mama for a while (more like repeating it), but just recently started using it correctly.  He has been calling DH dada forever, but I think that's because I'll always talk about dada - dada's home, go get dada, etc.

  • My son is 17 months old too and doesn't say Mama either. It's hard because he says Dada all the time. Like your LO, he can say a bunch of other words so I'm not worried, just a little jealous of my husband.

same here, DS only started calling me mama consistently about a month ago. he used to call me and DH daddy. of course, now he's started calling DH "mama" some of the time. ;)
  • He will say it every now and then but it's usually when he's mad or upset about something!

  • DD said "daddy" first, but now she uses "mommy" for both of us.

Actually, she uses "mommy" for any time she needs to ask anyone for help with anything.  Like, she'll go hand her coat to her grandpa, and say, "maaaah-meeeee!" if she wants it put on.  Or she'll say, "momMEE?" if she wants to know if she's allowed to have something, like a piece of food she wants.

    Kid language is weird.
  • J hardly ever says mom. I started making SO refer to me as Mommy around him because he was trying to call me by my real name. Lol.
  • Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one.  Thanks everyone!
  • My ds will not say mama, mommy, mom, or ma! It is so frustrating. He'll say dada, but not to dh.

  • DD doesn't say Mama nor does she call me anything. She will say Dada when prompted but she will NOT say Mama or mommy unless she wants. I figure she's just stubborn.

  • I take it back, she started saying "Mamama" a couple of days ago. It was all on her schedule I guess.

  • LO definately says Daddy more often than Mommy.   She has said Daddy since she started words but Mommy came much later.   It used to annoy be but I love hearing her say it now.   She will say Mommy if she is really upset and Daddy if she is really annoyed.   LOL

  • **Update**  My daughter is now 21 months and is STILL not saying mommy!  Her vocabulary has grown, but I still get no love.  LOL
  • Same here. She can tell you the characters in Yo Gabba Gabba. But no mama.
It will come and then you'll wish it would stop. My 6yo. calls me enough for her and her sister.

  • My Ds just started saying Mommy last month. I was worried about it, but now he's starting to say a lot.

  • Think of it this way – you're so much a part of your child's life that they don't even think they need a word for you :)
