High-Risk Pregnancy

Moms with bicuspid aortic valve

I have a bicuspid aortic valve, a minor congenital heart defect that, luckily, does not restrict me and probably won't affect my health until I'm well past my 50's.  Now that I am pregnant for the first time, I am wondering if anyone else has the same condition and whether they had to be more closely monitored by their cardiologist or whether there were any restrictions.

I have a cardiology appointment next month and will see what they say then...!

Re: Moms with bicuspid aortic valve

  • I had 5 normal pregnancies and deliveries before the doctors picked up on my condition.  Now expecting my 6 child the cardiologist says I should be treated as high risk.  So far I have no symptoms that bother me and the baby appears to be doing fine so far.  Good luck to you and your little one.

  • Hi there,

I was born with a aortic stenosis due to a bicuspid valve.  I had an open heart surgery at 2 to repair the valve and another at 24 to replace it with a bovine valve.  I am now 17 weeks along am treated as high risk but am doing fine so far.  My doc said that the condition may be hereditary so we will be getting a fetal echo at 22 weeks to check on the heart condition of the baby.  Only about a 4% chance of this being an issue so I'm not overly worried!

  • Hi! I too was born with a heart defect (moderate aortic stenosis) to be exact. I have a difficult decision to make as my cardiologist bad high risk doctor have asked me to consider terminating the pregnancy (I'm 17 weeks). I would like to know if you (or anyone else) had a successful pregnancy and if the baby suffered any complications. There isn't much data out there for me to make an accurate decision and I'm so undecided on how to move forward. Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.
