UPDATED!! Fert report (warning, some whining involved)

What a freakin roller coaster!
So yesterday we had 18 eggs retrieved. 17 looked mature. Only 8 were actually functionally mature, and 7 fertilized.

I feel so deflated. I know that 7 embies is a good number, but out of 18 eggs!?!? Grrrrrrr

The BIVF docs that took over AIVF are hell bent on picking the day and number to transfer before you even have embryos to look at, which is making me crazy! They tried getting me to sign a paper yesterday saying we were going to transfer two blasts on day 5......umm what!?! How about we wait and see what my less than stellar embies look like on day 2 first????

ill get over myself, I promise! I just am nervous that they are going to force us to day 5 and we are going to wind up with nothing to transfer

UPDATE:

Our wonderful embryologist called a little while ago with an update. Our 8th mature egg actually fertilized late, so we have 8 embryos now and 7 of them look 'excellent'. She is going to give me another update tomorrow (I love her!!!). We are scheduled for a day 5 transfer on Monday morning! I'm feeling better about this knowing with have 7 good embryos to get through the weekend with.

I hope all 7 continue to thrive! That is annoying that they are trying to make you sign the paperwork now!

That sounds really frustrating kmc. But focus on the positive, you've got 7 hopefuls! And it only takes 1. I know it's not that simple, but your chances are still great here!

I understand your frustration. The numbers seem to drop so quickly. 7 is still a good number - lucky 7. I agree with you - see how they are doing and then determine when the transfer will be and how many you transfer. Maybe they do it for scheduling purposes? I hope they all make it to blasts.

Thank ladies! I do realize that 7 is a great number. It's exactly what we had when cycled for A. I hope I didn't hurt any feelings with my complaining.

@Ducky719‌ I'm not sure why they have such a policy. Before BIVF took over AIVF, it was always a wait and see process, which makes sense to me. BIVF I guess has very strict guidelines about the number of embryos and grading to determine ET day. I signed the ET consent after the doctor wrote an addendum stating that we had not ruled out a day 3 ET and we would consult with the embryologist before finalizing anything.

The other thing that I don't understand is they were pushing an SET on day 5 (2 on day 3) but the papers yesterday said day 5 of two blasts! Transferring 1 on any day makes me nervous but 2 blasts makes me very nervous too!

@Happy_Yahoo_Personaler‌ we signed all the papers about freezing, what to do in case of death or divorce, but this 'new' paper was a very black and white 'this is what we are doing, no questions asked' kind of deal. It just made me uneasy.....

I think your frustrations are very understandable! All the discomfort of 18 eggs with a lower embryo count is certainly difficult! I hope all seven keep on doing well until one or two make it back to you!!

And, I certainly would not have signed a form agreeing to transfer 2 blasts at that point! I transferred 2, but only because the embryo quality was abysmal and we'd had a failed cycle with a perfect blast. And, both stuck! It's not okay to play the odds of a multiple pregnancy without having all the info. Good for you for standing your ground!

I agree with the PPs that 7 fertilized eggs is a good amount although you had hoped for more. FX they continue to grow.

I honestly don't know! Transferring one scares me and transferring two scares me also!

Twins makes me very nervous because A was born at 36w4d. I also have some health issues that makes it much harder physically to handle a twin pregnancy (even harder than it would be if I had no other issues!).

The thought of getting this far, putting back one and getting a BFN breaks my heart.

I think we'll decide on Monday and see what we are working with then.

ETA- If it were a day 3 ET, we would do two for sure. A day 5 ET is new territory for us!

Coming in late, but sounds like things are going great now! Glad to hear it. My opinion is that your clinic is crazy to automatically transfer 2 5 day embryos without knowing quality. Crazy. My personal experience with premature twins colors my opinion, but, if I can be blunt, I hate it when clinics do that because it's an indication of caring more about success rates than the individual circumstances and preferences of their patients. Now that I've been blunt, I really truly hope this works out perfectly for you, and I would totally support you transferring two if you make a decision to risk multiples if that's what's best for you, but I want it to be your decision, not because you are pressured into it.

I just read your post above. It sounds like twins are really risky for you, so if you have one of good quality, I'd only transfer one. It sounds like you're scared of a BFN, but at my clinic transferring two doesn't increase your chance of getting a BFP, it only increases your chances of multiples. The embryologist can also give you an idea Monday if it looks like any might make it to freeze.

@PurpleIris30‌ yes, twins would be (extra) risky. If things look good on Monday, at this point anyway, it's looking like one good blast is the way to go. Hopefully it works and if not, FX we get some frosties!

I completely understand, there are so many factors to consider. We've transferred 3 twice and it sounds crazy but with my age and DH's severe MFI it's the only way it's worked for us. I know you will make a sound decision for yourself and YH. Fx for you!
