Fainting spells?

Hi everyone! Quick intro:  My name is Beth, I'm 35 and pregnant with my first (it's a girl!), due October 8th...yikes! Hubby and I have been married since October 2003, so we're super excited to finally get lucky with this pregnancy :)

Pregnancy had been going pretty well up until last week when I started this random blacking out business. The first time I was at work and it hit me out of nowhere. I was sitting down, chatting with a coworker, when I started to get that fuzzy in the head feeling, kinda sweaty, and then really nauseous. I stood up to get to the restroom and I supposedly collapsed in my coworkers arms. I felt okay once I sat for a while and got some crackers and juice in me. A couple hours later when I left work, I still felt fine, just worn out. I drove almost 30 minutes home and got maybe 7 houses away from mine and blacked out again but this time came to with my car on the wrong side of the road and a telephone pole in the hood of my car :(. I was taken to the hospital and got CT scans of my head/neck and of course ultrasound to make sure baby was okay (thank goodness all was well!!!). A week later, a total of 5 of these episodes, holter monitor for my heart, echocardiograms, ekgs, blood work, ultrasound to check for DVT, and still no real answer. The cause seems to be blood pressure dropping drastically (last one was 74/46). Speculation is that baby is pressing on my vena cava, restricting blood flow back to my heart and brain fast enough. I've only been told to stay hydrated, increase salt, and try to shift to my left or right when sitting, and sleep on my left side.

Anyone else ever experience anything like this?? Not that I have a car to drive anymore, but I'm terrified to get behind the wheel again for the next 4 months!

  • I'm glad you are both alright. That is scary. Sorry I have no advice but to follow what your doctor says and make sure to keep in touch with them regularly. Note any changes (exact time and circumstances help), even if they don't seem relevant or significant. Best of luck with this. Hope you feel better soon. And welcome!

  • That is so scary. I went through a period of time where I could get very dizzy (weeks 13-17 or so), but it seems to have subsided. No actual fainting though, I've been able to sit/lie down when it happens. Keep us updated and stay safe (and salty)!
    TTC Since August, 2013

BFP#2 2/4/2014 EDD 10/15/2014 please stick little one!

  • I'm glad you are ok from the car accident. I occasionally get really dizzy if I wait to long to eat or if I'm too hot. I've thankfully been able to sit or grab water before I faint though. l

  • Thank you, ladies! It was quite an ordeal! One of those things that puts a lot in perspective, ya know? I'm hoping it's just a quick phase, like the morning sickness & sciatica pain  :(. I'll be doing all I can to keep myself and baby safe for the next 4 months! Hubby's new job is driving me around (Driving Miss Dizzy  :P).

  • I never had them so frequently, but I can always tell when one is coming on. I try to get my head as low as possible (lying down is best) and eat something. I haven't had one during pregnancy yet, or while driving... but I hope you get everything figured out soon!
  • That is so scary. I have only fainted due to an injury or blood draws but it is so scary to come to and not realize what just happened for a few moments. I can't imagine what it had to be like after the wreck. I am so glad that you and your lo are ok.

I hope you have no more incidents.
  • Do you have anxiety issues? Just asking because that is exactly what I felt like when I almost passed out in the NICU when I was visiting my nephew. I was able to sit down before I blacked out but I ended up throwing up.

  • @victoria+james, thank goodness I can feel them coming on now, too. Just the slightest bit of a fuzzy head & increased heart rate and I'm lookin' for a place to lay down! @lrobi13, thank you, me, too!! :)@JessAnnJ, not really...I've had a panic attack one or two times, but never anything like this where I truly lose consciousness  :-S. This is day two without any episode, so fingers are crossed the worst is over!

  • My goodness, that is scary! Are you going to continue working? I'd be scared to leave the house at all alone... especially driving! These babies can really make things hard on us. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
  • Sorry to hear you're going through this. Welcome to the board and fingers crossed you and your dr can figure out a solution (and that it goes away post pregnancy!)

  • First off Welcome and Congrats!

Secondly. That is so scary. Hopefully you and your doctor will figure out your trigger points and be able to limit those. When my SIL was pregnant, her blood pressure would drop really low. She had to be hospitalized for most of her pregnancy due to it. She could not even lift her head without getting dizzy.

Also hope that the doctors can find an answer quickly to help you and baby.

    Stay safe/

    Welcome & Congratulations!

I've dealt with black outs since middle school. I've gotten to be such a pro that I can navigate my house when I'm blacked out without running into anything. In High School I went through a tilt table test where they hooked me up to every monitor they could and strapped me to a table that moved around until I passed out; to see what triggers it. I fainted in the standing position. They decided that my blood rushes to my head when I stand up, but doesn't go down as quickly as it should, resulting in my black outs. Luckily that was one of the few times I blacked out. I was told to increase my salt & red meat intake, and was put on medication that I no longer take.

I hope that the tips your Dr gave you help you out. That's a scary situation, especially when you're carrying a LO!! T&P!

  • Welcome! I don't have any experience with fainting but that sounds pretty scary! I hope your doctor figures something out so you can avoid it in the future!

  • Thanks, everyone! Sorry I haven't seen these most recent replies until now! How come the app doesn't alert me that I have replies? Grrrrr.

For the most part, I've felt better but exhausted!!! Aren't we supposed to have this giant burst of energy this trimester?! I'm still waiting, lol! I've had a total of two blackouts (the day of the crash) and four near-misses, since this all started. I've caught on to sitting or laying quickly to reduce the symptoms. I only had one episode this week, so maybe they're getting less frequent...fingers crossed!

@cozybluebear, my plan is to continue working until as close to due date as I can stand, but we'll see! Work has been so stressful and short-staffed lately that I'd rather not, though! Too bad we need that money stuff, lol.

@sockgnome78, wow, I can't imagine spending the rest of the pregnancy in the hospital! Your poor SIL! :(. Was she okay after baby?

@femail, what an ordeal you went through! Glad they figured your situation out and you're off meds and okay!

@crawford411, that's exactly how it felt! Glad you could sit down and let it pass. Sounds like you're dealing with the same work situation, too (busy/short-staffed), which doesn't help us when we're not feeling our best :(. Isn't working in healthcare wonderful?
:P  I'd give your OB a call, just to give her a heads-up. Hopefully yours was a one-time deal!

  • @crawford411, glad you saw your OB! You got the same advice I got...good to know we're being treated the same :). I keep forgetting to check for compression socks at the store, not that this time of year is going to be very comfy wearing them :(.

Haha, you're right, at least you're in a good place if you go down all the way! I warned the nurses in our O.R. about my situation, so they've been watching me like a hawk when I do have to do surgery! I work in an x-ray department, so I while I don't have a comfy bed to lay down on, we do have tables that tilt so I can at least get my feet above my head!

  • Oh no! A woman registering at the desk of the antenatal center for an ultrasound this week fainted very quickly, but luckily another patient in the waiting room caught her before she hit the ground. It was so scary to see and I felt so bad for her. Really hope they can pinpoint where your spells are coming from and you feel healthy and safe! Congrats and best of luck to you, FX!!

P.S. Pretzels and pickles, mmmm :)

My niece is 9 1/2 now. She and mom are good.
My brother had her decided that adoption was a much safer route to go and we now have a niece and nephew.
