Bath time

Hey all!  I don't post often these days b/c Max and Em keep me running around like crazy.  But I'm hoping some experienced twin moms can offer me some advice.

Bath time is becoming super challenging.  More often than not, I am solo with them at bath time.  And both want to be standing up, trying to climb out of the bath, trying to drink the bath water, etc. I have always bathed them at the same time but I'm starting to feel overwhelmed.  Today Max fell trying to stand up and cut his lip.  Then while I was trying to get him out and calmed down and cleaned up/dressed, Emma proceeded to fall as well.  And of course started screaming although more shock than anything else.

Anyway, how do you guys handle bath time?  Thank you for any advice (or just commiserating ;)

Re: Bath time

  • We bathe separately, even if we're alone. The one not being bathed plays w some toys in a crib, or screams, whatever floats their boat that night.

We also have a big one and he'll "read" to his brothers or entertain them or something but even if he doesn't, bath time is a 5 min affair anyway.

But good God, the standing up in the tub phase is one of my least favorite.

How long does the standing up phase last??!!  I may switch to separate at this rate.  Baths usually last 15 or 20  minutes but honestly, I'm happy to cut it down and do them separately if need be!

  • The standing phase is long, or at least it was w my big one. At least 6mo? Once standing isn't so novel and they play better w tub toys, then they'll sit more.

Sometimes a toy does help them focus to sit too.

But you might find doing them separately takes just as long as doing them together. Like I said, I'm super quick w them. We haven't put them together for this reason - one slippery, standing, and unsteady baby is all I can handle at one time!

  • hi, my kids were about 9  mos. and i always bathed them separately. one weekend they stayed with my brother and he and my sil were like, of course we bathed them together!
if one ever tries to stand up i say, "all done"? and make a motion like we're going to pull them out of the tub. they like to stay in, so we say, then sit down on your bottom. they have figured it out that if they want to stay in the tub, they have to sit down.
  • I got bath seats. Worked great.
  • The twins aren't here yet, so take this with a grain of salt. DD is 3 1/2 (so we'll have 3) and we pretty much plan on bathing one child a day. With DD we haven't been able to bathe her more than once or twice a week or her eczema flares up too bad, so that's what we're going off of. She never really gets grows or stinky unless she's sick or spills dinner all over herself or something and then all bets are off, so we throw in an extra bath or two if things get messy.
  • At that age we used a blow up insert in the tub so they had a soft surround. We bathe both together every night as part of their bedtime routine. Most nights they love the bath and it's a nice part of our night. We took the blow up insert away once they were more stable and listening better. They still try and stand but it isn't so much of a liability. Bath rings are another good alternative to a blow up insert.

  • I too would look at bath seats, seems the safest and most efficient way to bathe them. My 17 month old DS still stands up in the tub, it isn't a phase for him, obviously. Drives me mad. We will get bath seats for the twins and I will do all 3 together as soon as it is safe. We are super quick bath timers though.

We do them separately and use a blow up insert. I have a bath seat but they won't sit still in it. They just bang and kick against the hard plastic too much and it leaves marks on them. I think it would be nice for babies that aren't so wild.

  • I do my triplets together, the trick is to have LOTS of different toys to entertain.
