Bottle Propping, With Boppy?

Hello.  My 6-month old is in daycare with 5:1 ratio, only 5 infants total.  Usually a floater is in the room as well.

I logged onto the webcam today and saw my baby double boppied (sp?).  Basically him laying back on one, and then the other placed on top the other direction holding up the bottle, and so his legs couldn't move.   The floater was rolling around on the floor with another baby, so it's not like no one was available.

Our state regulations states that infants only have to be held when eating until 6 months, but after cannot lay flat.  While he isn't laying flat, it's pretty close.

I asked the teacher and she said it was to help him with holding the bottle himself.  I would maybe be okay if he was sitting up on his own eating, but this seems almost like he's trapped.

Thoughts? Would you press the issue further?  Other than this, we have been very happy with care.

Thank you!

Nope, propping the bottle is not OK.

  • Agree with all the PPs. And it's one reason I am very glad my state's regulations require infants up to one year to be held for bottle feedings.

  • No way. Our daycare does not allow bottle propping at all. Babies are held for feedings.

  • And WTF with the double Boppy?? That sounds like a major suffocation risk. I'd go in there and kick some ass.

  • I agree with the PPs. That is seriously NOT ok and I would definitely talk to the director, report them, and pull my kid out. That is just flat out dangerous and lazy.

  • I totally agree with PP's.  NOPE. Too dangerous.

I would definitely talk to the director because she might not even know what's going on and she should.  I will say that when I was visiting DS's daycare once, one of the helpers started to prop a bottle for a baby and the director was all over her in an instant.  She told her that they never, ever, ever prop bottles and then I never saw that girl in there again.  So I wasn't happy that it almost happened, but seeing how quickly and strongly she reacted made me feel confident that she wasn't going to let stuff slide.

NOPE. Not ok, and most likely against state regulations. Talk to the director ASAP.

  • Absolutely not. The regulations are in place for a reason and that reason is the child's safety. What you described is a choking hazard. Thank goodness your center has a camera in place otherwise you may have never known about this. I would be considering another center if they think this is OK when your state clearly says it isn't.

  • we looked at a daycare for our kids who are older and ruled the center out for what you just wrote.  I said something to them about it being against state regs and unsafe and they were trying to come up with every excuse in the book

  • Thank you all!

We are following up with supervisor tomorrow and will see what "official" position is.  If they are okay with this, then we will be leaving.

  • Definitely not okay. And possibly illegal.
