Tummy time?

Just curious as to when you guys started it and for how long? DH tried it a week or so ago with ds but he hated it! He's just over 3 weeks now...I inow it's important for his development and was thinking if having DH try again this weekend (still recovering from c section so being on my belly on the floor isn't gonna happen anytime soon lol)! We have one of those activity mat things so I was gonna have him use that...thoughts, your experiences?

We started just about right away with her on our stomach lying down. Then at about 5 days once we were home we would use the activity may and do it briefly until she was pissed at us. Basically we do t at least once a day and a lot of it is still tummy to tummy lying down. Or having her lie over a boppy on the couch or my lap facing me. She also has amazing head control with us just holding her upright on our arms at almost a month. So there are a lot of ways to do it and some will work better for your LO than others!

  • Started when his stump fell off. He tolerates it for about 5 minutes now but in extending the time each time and try not to pick him up the second he fusses

I roll a flat (cloth diaper) for under his arms. Just helps him position his arms to lift his head. I plan on taking away as the muscles in his trunk develop. The flat made a difference.

He lifts his head quite well now when carrying him or holding him upright. He's getting stronger fast.

I put him in front of his mirror or in front of a book to motivate him to lift his head as there is something to look at.

Olive is 6 days old. She has loved tummy time since the start. Literally. The doctor put her on my stomach after birth and she lifted her head to look at DH.  Our ped said we could start as soon as we got home, and she could spend 10 mins at a time on her tummy. We do tummy time at least a few times a day.

I also had a cs. I would put tons of pillows behind me and lay back angled at like 45 degrees and put him on my chest. He would lift his head to look at me. Also, I put him on the couch and would sit on the floor so he could lift and see (obviously keep your hands super close). He's not a fan of the activity mat on the floor but he's gotten strong from doing it the other two ways.
  • We started as soon as the cord came off. She loves it. We put her down until she cries- 10/15 mins.

  • I also started daily after cord fell off. My LO is very strong and was able to lift his head off my chest the day he was born. He doesn't love tummy time but it is helping develop his muscles. He also moves his legs a ton when on his stomach. I try to put him on his tummy for a few minutes multiple times a day.
  • I started doing it on the floor after the cord stump came off, I think maybe at 8 or 9 days old. Just for 5 minutes or so. We did again this morning (2 weeks old now) but LO was fussing so we barely made it to 5 mins. She still sleeps a lot between feeding so it's hard to find time during the day that she's awake long enough after eating to do it.

If you spend time with the baby on your chest, that counts too. We do that a lot.

  • We started on the playmat when LOs cord stump fell off. We started with as long as he'd tolerate it, which was brief at first. It has gradually increased as he's gained strength. LO started rolling from belly to back yesterday. He's one month today. He also gets tummy time on me and DH.
  • DD is 2 weeks old and pedi said we should be doing 5-10 min per day now that stump is off. We did it yesterday for the first time and she liked it! Today she sermed to tired to really get her head up but we still let her lay there for a few minutes.

Ok thanks ladies! My guys stump just fell off shy of 3 weeks old. He lifts his head like crazy when I hold him close to my chest and yesterday I had him on his tummy on our bed for about 10 min until he was pretty mad! Looking forward to trying some of your suggestions.

In terms of rolling over...when does that happen? He can easily roll from back to side but then he's stuck lol
