Breastfeeding

breastfeeding and ovulation

I've been breastfeeding for 8 months.  My baby started solids around 6 months (2 months ago).  I had a period last month..  I've always been somewhat regular.  Now I'm going on 35 days and no period.  Could have conceived 9 days ago.  Pregnancy test today was negative and it was the higher sensitivity kind.  I'm just trying to figure out if most people have very irregular periods when breastfeeding?  Are you more fertile during this time?  I am going to start using the basal thermometer but haven't yet.  Just anxious to know if I'm pregnant or not and wondered what other women's cycles were like.  Not had any change in milk flow.

When you start temping, all will become clearer. You will know if you are ovulating and have a chance. Have you even gotten your period back?
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • I got my first PP period at 13 months with DS#2.  I started temping because we planned on TTC #3 soon.  I had a period regularly, and ovulated, but my luteal phase was short.  Only 5 days when fully breastfeeding, then 8 days during weaning, then went back to 12 days after weaning.

But...everyone is different!  I would recommend temping if you want to know if/when you're ovulating.  I know that cycles can also be irregular while breastfeeding, it's normal.

  • i would guess you're just having a long cycle. i got my first PP period when DS was 12 months (he is now 21 months). my cycles have all been long-- generally 33-35 days, but some have even gone to 36-37 days. seconding PPs advice to start charting your cycles (if you're not familiar, the book taking charge of your fertility is a great place to start). at the very least, use condoms if you are trying to avoid pregnancy and aren't charting.
  • My cycles are longer 35-40 days with late ovulation (CD 28-30) and a short LP (only 8 days last cycle).

  • Didn't get my period back until 13 months and then didn't get one for 40 something days after that. With each one, they were shorter than the last but even on my last cycle at 17 months, I ovulated on day 20 and I'm now 6 weeks pregnant but my cycle was on schedule to be 30 something days. All that to say- it's very normal. If you are TTC, I'd suggest tracking ovulation. 9 DPO is still pretty early to test. I did get my BFP on 10 DPO but a lot of women don't get a positive until they miss their period. Wait a few days and test again.

  • Well these responses make me think I should go take a test lol. I have been bfing for 6.5 months now and have had two periods that were close enough together I didn't worry that it was a couple days longer than a prepregnancy cycle. But now I'm pretty sure I'm two weeks over. I'm on the mini pill so I highly doubt that I am and just assumed it was due to irregularity. But none of the pp's seemed to say that.
  • It just depends on the person.  My cousin never even got a postpartum AF and got pregnant when her DD was 4 months old.  I on the other hand had AF return when DD was 15.5 months.  Started charting right away, first cycle I did not ovulate, second I ovulated but my LP was too short to support implantation (I think it was 9 days), third cycle LP was long enough but BFN, fourth cycle I was pregnant.

A little early to test, but as pp said if are 14 days out and still getting negatives you are probably not pregnant.
