Dog allergy?

We are dog sitting for DH's cousin while they are on vacation. The dog will be here until Tuesday. She's not trouble and L loves her. The problem is that a little bit ago I noticed that L's eye is puffy and red. He had just finished a tantrum so that explains some of the redness, but it's pretty puffy. Kind of how it was a few weeks ago when he had what we think was an allergic reaction to something he touched. The only thing I can think of is that he got some of the dog's fur in his eye, maybe?! He's been around the dog pretty much his whole life since we spend a lot of time with them. Surely if he were truly allergic we would have noticed before now, right? I flushed out his eye with eye drops and gave him Benadryl, which is what we did last time. His eye already is looking better, so maybe it's just a weird thing. I hate allergies.
Because you're mine, I walk the line....

Re: Dog allergy?

  • They can come and go, especially with kids. I've heard of people with dog/ cat allergies wiping the animal down with distilled water, and keeping them bathed/ brushed to help with allergies.

  • I have a pretty severe dog allergy and it's not the hair that makes someone allergic, it's the dander, which is produced in the animal's skin and then falls off.  Just to point out that even if you don't see hairs around, the dander can still be there.  If he does have an allergy and the dog is staying in your home, you should make sure to vacuum thoroughly and wash all the fabrics you can after the dog leaves.  Even the things the dog has just been in the same room with because dander is easily airborne or carried by other fabrics.

Hopefully it's not a bad allergy!  It doesn't sound too severe.  I get wheezing, runny nose, sneezing, red swollen eyes and hives if I'm in a house that has dogs.  The only way to know for sure is to take him to an allergist and get a skin test.
  • Wash his hands after he handles the dog. If he is allergic, that will help.
