Let's talk maternity swimsuits

One piece? Tankini? Bikini? What do you prefer?

I have a super long torso, making it so hard to find a swim suit. You won't catch me in a bikini to save my life. That being said are maternity swimsuits any longer than a regular swim suit?
With a normal swim suit one pieces are not long enough for my body and cut into my shoulders, Tankinis are not long enough and you can see my stomach. And then the cup size. I'm plus size my boobs are not. Why do they make that shit so big?
What is your recommendation?

  • Before BFP I was a tankini gal. Now I am not sure what I should do.

I want to do some aquasize and I think - a 1 piece would work best for that, but all I can find is tankini's.

  • I have always spent way more than I probably should on swimsuits, but this time, there was no way I was spending a lot on a suit I'd only wear a few times this summer. So I bought a tankini from Target.  The top is long and comes down very well over my belly and is pretty comfortable too. It also has good coverage and support for my boobs, which are ginormous these days!  We're going on vacation to the beach this weekend so I'll get to try it out.  :)
  • I am also going to Hawaii in September, so I have no idea what size I should get.

  • Jumping in late, but I've been debating what to do for a bathing suit too.  I thought about just wearing my bikini, but now that I'm actually getting bigger, I realized that I probably won't feel comfortable doing that.  I just can't find anything that I feel good in.  Ugh.

I bought a tankini in a size up and I think it will work for the times I will be in a swimsuit and will need to conceal myself a bit, otherwise I plan to wear my norm bikini just to get my belly sunkissed a bit
  • I got one from lands end. They have tunic tankini tops that can be adjusted on side. I did go up 2 sizes and crossed my fingers that it would fit and it did. I still like my Victoria secret bottoms though and are still wearing those

Last time around I did a tankini. However I hated all the maternity bottoms so I bought regular bottom a size or two up (can't remember which and I haven't pulled it out yet). I did buy maternity tops because they were so much longer. The tops were my normal size just maternity. At home I just squeezed into whatever but I had to have something for vacation. So, I was 6-7 months along when I got them.

    Edit: bought mine at target.

  • I bought this bathing suit at Target and loved it so much, I ended up buying another. They show it with the boy shorts, but I'm a chub, and got the matching skirted bottom instead. God bless whoever invented the skirted bottom. This fits me and my boobs (which are big) incredibly well and I don't look huge in it! Score and score.

  • I got a one piece from Motherhood Maternity (outlet) and it it a faux tankini.  It's a one piece with nude between the top and bottom with a piece of fabric in the front that is not attached at the bottom.  (I am describing this terribly).  Basically, it looks like a one piece now, but as my belly grows, it will look like a tankini in the front if my tummy peeks.  Solid one piece in the back.  I took it on my cruise and liked it.

i bought this top from target also and love it. i didn't buy bottoms because i think i might be able to fit into old bikini bottoms but we'll see. i also ordered a black one piece from old navy that fits well. i'm tall but dont have a particularly long torso so i can't offer advice on that but try target or old navy.

  • My bathing suits are all pregnancy friendly.  We do most of our beach vacationing in Essaouira and Agadir (and I prefer to be modest over there...)  So I wear "hot" little numbers like this:

I have them in a few colours and patterns... they will accommodate a belly....   and they will cover any mistakes I made while trying to tame the bikini line.  Things are already getting hard to see down there!

  • I second the Lands End recommendation for tankinis or one-pieces. When I get further along and look more obviously pregnant, I might just try to brave a bikini though... Seems like it would be more comfy to get on and off.

  • Kohls has a handful of maternity tankinis and some are longer than others. My suggestion is order a bunch, try them on at home, you can easily return at the store. Currently they have free shipping for orders over $50. Right now, you can also use the following code FATHER30 to get 30% which makes the swim suits about $25 each.
  • I got a plus size maternity tanking at JCP- the top is pretty long, so it could probably accommodate your long torso. Target also has cute ones.

  • With DS I kept my bikini but only went swimming a few times that summer because I wasn't comfortable enough around people.  This time I have a tankini top and kept my black bikini bottoms to wear with it!  I tried it all on before I went on vacation last week but it hangs off me and looks silly right now, I need to be a bit bigger to pull it off.

  • My bump is getting out of control but my boobs and butt have barely changed so my bikinis still fit perfect. I'm a bit frugal when it comes to buying anything I won't get a lot of use out of so unless it becomes an absolute need I'm rocking the same bikinis through the whole pregnancy. If ppl don't like my bump they can look away the same way I do when I see old men in speedos
  • Okay, I'm feeling huge now. I bought a tankini from Target last week and took the kids to the beach yesterday. I guess I'll have to take a pic next time we go.

I just don't like one pieces and I definitely didn't want to try squeezing my butt into even a maternity one!

A little late to the conversation but for anyone else interested......
I'm over 5'10 and recently bought a tankini in a specialty long size from Athleta. It was pricey but the quality was outstanding and I anticipate being able to wear it for years. Might be worth checking out their sale items and ordering a couple of sizes up.

I think July 14 had a tall girl thread re: maternity clothes a couple of months back. Might be worth checking out!

eta: Apparently, I like to use the phrase worth checking out. A lot.

  • I will be rocking the bikini. I think pregnant bellies are super cute and I don't care what others think. Besides, I will likely only be swimming in my backyard this summer so it doesn't really matter :)
