Come in crunchy mommas

DS seems to have eczema on his face, head, chest, back of knees, and tummy. Pretty much everywhere. Pedi prescribed a cortisone cream, which helps, and I'm bathing/lotioning him with Eucerin Baby. Looking for some natural remedies as well though. Thanks!

  • I'm not big on using the cortisone cream either. We use Aquaphor right now, which helps some. I also want to try coconut oil since that seems to be the go to for a lot of things but not sure if that will help since it is oil.

Have you used any Aveeno products? We use aveeno lotion, as he seemed sensitive to the Johnson's & Johnson's. I have eczema that was terrible as a kid and my mom used to give me Aveeno baths. Haven't tried their baby wash or anything yet, but I'd imagine it would help.

  • Sorry, posted before I finished! Have you tried oatmeal? If you google oatmeal for eczema, there are how tos.

  • Aquaphor ointment twice a day and right after baths is the only thing that got rid of LOs face/head eczema. How often or you giving baths? Maybe cut down and just do wipe downs somedays. Good luck. Eczema sucks.

Bryce has eczema is the same places. But right now only has a flare up on his neck and behind 1 knee. This has been my routine when changing him.
Wipe down areas with washcloth, let air dry take off onesie, apply thin layer of cortisone, change diaper, put on onesie, seal cream with aquaphor, finish dressing him. I am thinking of trying coconut oil because these two area seem to never go away. I also put aquaphor on all the other places even when there not red/bothering
    him.

ETA: During baths I use room temp water and eucerin dry skin healing, gold bottle with blue top. He gets a bath every other day and for less than 10 minutes. Rinse, wash, rinse since the water drys out their skin more. Good luck! Hope your little guy gets better soon!
  • Has he always had it? Or is it new? My baby's eczema was best controlled via diet. Since he's ff, you can try soy or nutrimigen.

But if you've already tried those, I don't remember if it was @psychdoc12 or @petdocd suggested soaking the baby in bath everyday and we do that, too, before applying lotion. I don't remember the name of the lotion but another eczema mom gifted it to me.

We make soaking in the tub teally easy by placing his baby tub in the corner of our stand up shower, and h and I both take turns taking showers in there while we leave him soaking through both showers, and the water from our shower sprays into a bit of his tub to keep the water warm.

  • Oh okay, I'm sorry, I don't know everyone on the board very well! Hopefully you can find something that will work and gives him some relief!

@jennlin‌ we've been through both of those formulas and he's been on Elecare formula (hypoallergenic) since he was 5 weeks old. We've been dealing with it for about 2 months. He refuses all solids so I know it can't be something he's eating. Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I'm determined to figure it out!

  • I have used lavender essential oil on DS for his eczema. My circle of friends is really into essential oils. I tested a small spot on his skin first to make sure he didn't react then applied it to his skin once or twice a day. I got mine from Young Living but you can get it from health food stores.

I remember that, I think it was @petdocd  And IIRC her doc told her to bathe/soak baby in water everyday, like you said, but don't use soap everyday because that'll dry out the skin and make it worse.
oh yes. definitely. no soap unless he starts to smell! just a very good water bath... also i had been using johnson's natural baby soap for a while, until i realized there was soy in there. we're now using kirk's castile soap (if we use it).

  • Babyganics has a great eczema line. Oatmeal baths are great and lavender essential oils I use young living. Also it's not natural but triple cream is awesome
  • My husband has excema and one day randomly put A's California Baby Calendula Cream (we use it as a butt cream every once in a while) on his spots and they disappeared within a couple of days. It's pricey, but I'm amazed at how fast it has cleared up his rashy spots and her occasional diaper rash. Worth a shot...
  • CeraVe has worked great for us as well.

And several were recommending Mustela Stelatopia.

I thought that water, even without soap, was bad for eczema? I'm pretty sure that is what our pedi said when DD had a couple small patches.

Hot water and soap is bad for eczema, warm water allows the skin to absorb moisture.

  • My friend has a daughter with really bad eczema (she's 20 months now) and she said the big thing for them was diet (she was allergic to wheat, garlic and a few other things) and also putting the baby in 100% cotton clothing

What @crunchymama11‌ said about lavender EO and coconut oil. I know several moms who have used this mixture successfully.

Speaking of coconut oil and EOs, my miracle diaper "cream" is coconut oil with lavender, roman chamomile, and melaleuca. I put it in a small spray bottle and apply liberally. Works pretty much immediately. DS had an awful diaper rash at I think two months old and nothing else was working. Poor kid had open sores. First application and it started healing right away. Good stuff. :)

    I use doTERRA oils.

ETA -- lavender has anti inflammatory properties, that's why it helps

  • We use the baby Aveeno excema lotion and that works pretty well coconut oil didn't really work for me. I've also heard good things about diluted bleach baths and swimming in the pool. The chlorine is good for the excema. Gl!

Cerave cream works on my eczema every time. I put it on before bed. Very thick but it does the job.

We've been using the baby Aveeno oatmeal bath packets recently because DD has had a yeast infection (ped rec.). It may be helpful for the eczema as well.

Yes the aveeno oatmeal works great! There is even an oatmeal lotion. It cleared my LO right up
