using a crib from 1987....?

so I don't have a crib because we have a basinett and pack and play and apt is teeny so I didn't think I'd need one. now were looking to move an dmy mom has my old crib and said it should be fine to use because she never had probs with it . it's the kind where the side slides up and down. I know those aren't " allowed" anymore but is it really that dangerous? I never got hurt when I was little but jw what your opinions are? should I buy a new one or use my old one?

  • Personally I'd probably use it. Like you said - you used it and you're fine.

    I would not agree to use a crib that old -- cribs have to pass some pretty strict guidelines that can change from year to year and I think it would be safe to assume that a lot of things in crib safety have changed in nearly 20 years.

    This!
  • I have a secind crib at the cottage that is from the 50's that the spindles meet the current regulations but it has a drop down side that DH secured to no longer drop down. So it is basically the same as our new crib except it is made if real solid wood. I would use it if it meets current standards.

    Nope. Wouldn't use a drop side crib. Just because nothing happened to you doesn't mean its not risky.
  • I was in the same situation and couldn't do it. If you do decide to, I would secure the sides, ensure the spindles are close enough together, and go over it very carefully to look for loose screws or connections. I looked at stats for crib injuries and decided it wasn't worth it. If you feel comfortable doing it though, go for it.

  • You can buy kits to not make it a drop side. Id just fix that.

    Id use it if it was in great condition, but thats me.
  • "I never got hurt when I was little" is totes the best reason to do anything. I mean they definitely didn't change the requirements, guidelines, and safety standards because hundreds of children were injured, or killed, right? That wouldn't make any sense at all. They also don't lovingly call the dropside cribs "deathtraps" for a good reason.

    P.S. who keeps a crib for 27 years?

  • Personally, I wouldn't. Current safety standards exist for a reason. If you really want to, though, take @sticky11's advice.

    As for your reasoning, I can't really get behind that logic. A lot of people survived a lot of stupid things back in the day. Doesn't make it ok to continue doing them now.
