Hello Ladies,
I am mostly a lurker but had a question. (I apologize if this has been asked before.)
I am from an area where it is common to have a baby shower after the baby has arrived. My family has dealt with some late trimester losses so I know that this will be the case for me. My aunt very generously approached me about hosting a shower for me after babies arrival and the timeline is roughly 2-3 weeks after.
My question is what is essential for the first few weeks? I plan to breastfeed but would it be helpful to have a bottle around? How many outfits would I need?
If anyone has any insight into this that would be extremely helpful, as I don't really know what I'm doing...
Re: Shower After Babies Arrival- What do I Need?
The baby doesn't need much, but there are some essentials:
- A car seat (required by law)
- At least 10 outfits because they go through them quickly.
- A few blankets would be good (although you can sometimes take the ones from the hospital).
- Diapers/wipes
- A place for the baby to sleep (most people have the baby in a co-sleeper, a bassinet, rock-n-play or pack-n-play initially and only move them to crib when they're older
- Perhaps sheets depending upon where the baby is sleeping
- A breastfeeding pillow if you're breastfeeding (something like the boppy) - although you could just use regular pillows.
- Bottles if your are formula feeding (you could have one or two on hand, but your DH could also go out and buy them if you need them)
- A nursing bra/clothes for you.
Everything else can probably wait in my mind (unless I"m missing something big). You can wait on a pump for sure.
I have the car seat and crib ordered. I was in BRU and was totally overwhelmed. I didn't realize how much there was and the customer service was less than helpful.
Are there any items that you found weren't necessarily essential but were nice to have in the first few weeks?
@darbie914 your comment about buying everything you need anyway is a good point. I would rather have these things now then wait it out for 3 weeks, and I am guilty of buying "fun stuff" for people for their showers- like clothes, etc, not necessarily the items they registered for.
