Round ligament pain

I've just started getting these sharp pains in my left side by my belly button. Have Googled it (I know!! You can't always believe what you read online) and it sounds like round ligament pain. Anyone else had this before? Jeez they suck!!!

Re: Round ligament pain

  • I get it when I laugh, sneeze, stand up too fast, turn over in bed or pretty move quickly in any direction lol. Dr says round ligament pain. It hurts more than I thought it could.

Btw my dr told me that when she was in med school she would see women come in at 3 am with the pain and they would get any home every time. she thought they were crazy until she got pregnant and realized how much it hurt lol

  • Yep, it's round ligament. I get mine the worst at night, but also when I stretch.
  • Got it first time today. Woke up and extended my leg. Sharp stabbing pain on the left side above pelvic bone. Lasted a few minutes. Freaked out and called the DT's office today. The nurse said since there was no watery discharge or spotting, there's really nothing to worry about. Asked her if I should stop stretching like that. Nurse said since it scared me, then I should maybe get up and walk around first before stretching (essentially the same as 'avoid sudden movements')
  • I've been getting it big time. Especially today. It's been 4 years since being prego with DD so I kinda forgot about little things like this and I googled it ha ha. Bad juju but then I remember about the ligaments and was like,"dang it!!!!!" Ha ha. Good luck ladies
  • Mine was really bad for awhile while rolling over or getting up from bed.  I would also tell my DH not to make me laugh if I was lying down.  It hasn't been so bad lately (I am 15w5d), but I am really careful when getting up!

And yes, coughing and sneezing can be terrible!

  • I've felt this the last two nights in my sleep. The first night I literally screamed out loud and went right to the bathroom because I thought something was wrong. Last night it felt like a ripping pain in my left pelvic/abdominal area. Today some residual minor cramping like period cramps. I've been feeling the baby move which is reassuring but I still called my doctors office today to get some info.

Makes me wonder what contractions actually feel like...yikes!
  • It's terrible - it can literally take your breath away. I stood up after a particularly long meeting the other day and double over in pain. So embarrassing!

  • I'm a STM but I don't remember this with DS!  Last night I had a sharp pain in my abdomen, then again this morning.  I have a doc appt on Wednesday and I haven't experienced any bleeding plus I felt the baby move this morning so I was going to wait and talk to the doc.  This post made me feel a bit better!  Is it always the left side?  I think it felt more central...maybe its not round ligament pain I'm feeling...

  • I find taking it slow helps. I kind of look like a stoned koala but I take my time rolling over, standing up, etc. and I get them less often that way.

The stoned koala made me laugh.

I've been getting these pains too, although not as severe as some of the other ladies here it sounds like. They really surprise you, don't they? I feel like this is another one of those symptoms that no one tells you about.

Mine this time around have been more on my right side. From what I understand, the ligaments are on the left and right sides, but can wrap to the middle some too. It does hurt like a mofo, wherever it is!

  • Yeah the round ligament pain sucks, but you know what i thought was worse with ds? When your ribs start to stretch and spread, wholly mother! Husband would rub the same aching spot on my ribs every day. The way your body grows and moves and changes for baby is truly amazing, and borderline medieval torture.

  • I've had the cramping style pains in the lower pelvic area when I sneeze (they suck) but this was a new sensation. More in the tummy by the belly button. That's why I ended up Googling it. It's certainly reassuring that I'm not the only one to experience these pains! DH keeps asking if I think it's all ok, whether the baby is feeling it too (bless him) and I just keep telling him "it's just your baby growing! Everything's fine" :)
  • PS: I think I need to invest in a heating pad!

My midwife always says discharge is normal (especially in the 2nd tri the amount increases) but as long as it's normal colour, consistency and smell then it's fine. Keep an eye on it though!

It's the worst. I was lying down the other day and sneezed and thought I was going to die lol. I was so scared for the baby I immediately got the doppler out to make sure I could hear the heart beat. Glad to hear that it's normal!  No my sneezing while lying on my back!

If I'm laying down and feel the need to sneeze I literally have to pull my knees to my chest before I sneeze or if I'm standing I have to quickly squat down on the floor in a ball to compress my uterus- that's how bad my pains get!!
  • I've been getting them bad for about a week and a half..but mine are mainly in my pelvic/groin area...I literally feel like I got kicked in my vajayjay (greys anatomy fan lol) really hard! It's so painful to sit and walk. I've also been getting really bad discharge..but it's clear discharge so I figure it's normal.
