26 weeks, sharp abdominal pain under right breast

Hello there, can anyone help me? I am 26 weeks preggy, this is my fifth week when I am suffering from a horrendous pain just below my right breast, it feels like the whole are is bruised and even the skin is sensitive to touch. It comes and goes as a sharp stubbing pain, but stays all the time like this tingling and burning sensation. I went to see a doc about it 3 weeks ago, they took my blood to check my liver and that was all fine, I continued being in pain thinking it will go away. It didn't and it got so severe that last week we ended up in a hospital, lots of pain killers but very soft ones due to baby. I went to have ultrasound scan to check if it was my gallbladder and if I had stones. That shown all clear and liver and pancreas clear too. So no one knows why I am in so much pain, my doc gave me gaviscon to try but I don't have a heartburn! I was back at the docs office today in tears, I cant handle this pain very well, and she said that it may be baby pushing or something to do with my muscles. Anyone else suffered from this? how can I help the pain? paracetamol does not help, I hardly sleep and I am only 26 weeks in!? Who do I go to see? I run out of options...thank you!!

I had terrible pain in the area right under my right breast for weeks starting around 25ish weeks. It was just rib pain but it was very debilitating pain. It went away around 37 weeks when the baby dropped. My dr said its very common and even more common on the right side.

I didn't want to take meds so I just sucked it up and was happy to still be pregnant.

  • I had that. It was the underwire in my bra. I now only wear sports bras and I'm good to go. It took a day or two to feel better but I now have no pain.
  • I had a similar pain a few weeks ago and I also had it after I had my DS when I was breastfeeding. I think it's from the breasts getting ready for breastfeeding.
  • My ob said it was most likely my ribs expanding to make room. I terrible pain from week 28-30.
  • I had terrible rib pain around that time- felt like stabbing every time I took a breath, or like a stitch after running but it wouldn't go away.  Turns out my rib was out of place- thank goodness my friend is a chiropractor.  I had no idea that could even happen!  It's apparently pretty common, but the ribs usually pop themselves back in.

  • Thank you ladies!

The more I read about it the more I think it must be my ribs expanding and causing this pain, I am getting used to it now, but at least once a day it reduces me to tears when the 'knife' like stubbing comes. It doesn't last long but long enough to make my eyes water. It really is a shame that I/some of us get this as it really does spoil the other things in pregnancy. Paracetamol doesn't help at all so I decided to ditch that. Will let you know how long it will last for, hopefully it will go away soon!

I guess I need to suck up and be happy :)
  • I'm now at week 33 and have been having this same right side pain for over a month now. Doc said its most likely the abdominal muscle separating/tearing, or the ribs readjusting as baby grows. Nothing much can be done other than warm/cold compresses & light pain killers :( doesn't help that no matter how supportive my bra is, wire or not, i can't the pressure off of that spot.

  • I have that pain.  I've had it since week 32.  It hasn't brought me to tears and I chalked it up to baby pushing his weight around in that area.  You described it better than I could - it really is like a stabbing, burning sensation...sometimes the area feels like it goes numb, too.  I get it whether I wear underwire or not, it doesn't really matter and I can have heartburn and this pain, so I've ruled those two out.  Thanks for posting about it, I thought it was just me.

  • Hello Ladies, quick update from me - nothing changed :( I will be 29 weeks on Monday and still in pain. I quit the painkillers as no help at all, I mention this every time I see my midwife but nothing can be done, I stick to the diagnosis that it is my ribs pushing and hope that after delivery all will be back to normal. It really gets bad at least once a day, I still work, and I am most of the day in sitting position and thats when it always get worse, I try to move around as much as I can but sometimes even when I walk the stubbing comes. I stopped wearing under wired bras long time ago, so never put this pain to that. It really sucks, I am afraid that all I will remember from being preggy will be that pain and it really makes me think 'never again' :( Some of us gets it some of us don't, every pregnancy is different, we might be the less lucky ones.. Really hope it will go away soon, can't imagine another 10 or more weeks of that! Love to all xx
  • I am living with this pain right now.  For me, it's the baby pushing up and straining the intercostal muscles (muscles between the ribs).  I am looking forward to this baby dropping, because there are days where it is unbearable.

When you lie down, does the pain go away? Or, can you move into a position where it doesn't hurt?  If so, it's most likely the baby.  If not, there may be something else going on, although it seems like you've ruled most of those issues out (liver and GB).
