Flying alone with twins

I want to take my girls to visit a friend out of town. DH would probably stay home or come back early leaving me to fly alone with twins. Any advice or experience? I assume I'd need two seats. My girls are 3 months (trip would be in next 2-3 months) and generally happy & good nappers , car travelers, etc. It would be two 2 hr flights with a plane change / layover in between. Is these a terrible idea?

Re: Flying alone with twins

  • I would check with the airline. I would have just assumed that I needed one adult per infant in case of an emergency? But I could be totally out to lunch!

  • I think as long as both or at least one has their own seat. You can only have one lap child, plus you have to check to make sure there are enough oxygen masks. On the airline I usually fly, there's only one more oxygen masks than seats and they aren't allowed more people than oxygen masks even though it's a very slim chance you'd need them.

Also, I'm a seasoned traveler. And even I can't travel with the twins by myself. It's so difficult carrying them on, plus all your gear, breaking down te stroller.

Southwest allows this. You can have one on lap and one in a puchased seat in a car seat.
    I just called.

  • I'm sure you can if you buy two seats. I just don't know if I would.

How do you get two babies down the aisle? Wear one and hold one? Are you sitting the other in a seat? W a car seat? How do you get that down the aisle while wearing one baby and holding the other? What about your luggage? A diaper bag? Other carry ons? What if you have to pee during the flight? How do you bring both babies to the bathroom? If one poops and needs to be changed, how do you do that? You'd have to at your seat (which some pple don't like to do).

I don't mean to be a downer and more power to you if you can - but the logistics of it at that age make my head spin. They stop being furniture around that time too - wanting to explore, touch things, hold things. Again, more power to you. But never In a million years for me.

DH and I travel all of the time with our singleton, but it takes both of us for it to be "enjoyable" (used loosely, of course). Not that it isn't do-able, just as long as you can handle the stress and give yourself plenty of time between flights, you should be fine. Of course, check everything except stroller/car seat/backpack with diapers and emergency gear and go straight to your gate and the desk person flight attendant will more than likely let you on first (with your stroller and car seats) so you can get settled. You will be the last to deplane but they should be able to help you then too. The logistics of actually getting on the plan do seem hard. Do you have a snap and go? GL and let us know how it goes!

Lurking here! But I work for SW as a flight attendant. I thought that maybe I can help. You'll only need two seats. You can have one lap child and then a car seat for the other. I would suggest bringing your stroller. So that you can easily carry things to the gate. You can gate check your stroller to your connecting city and then again to your final destination. You can ask the first Flight Attendant to help you carry a bag or a baby to your seat. Normally we are happy to help especially if we get to carry a baby! =) Our passengers are normally very nice too and just might offer to help with out you asking for help. If you have anymore questions you can ask me. =)

All of this is what I was thinking. Very helpful. Thanks! I was thinking use a moby for the one not in a car seat.

Anyone actually do it? I'm actually not that nervous about it especially if I go soon while they still sleep a lot and arent mobile.

One more tip, you can check with the airports on gate passes so that someone who is not traveling can meet you at the gate. Apparently they will let someone unticketed come meet you.

My DH and I flew with the boys at 8 months and it was hard because they did NOT want to sit still. They don't do well in the car seat for long so I was afraid to try it alone with them. At 3 months I don't think it would have been too bad.

  • How is your overall state? At 3 months I was still getting by on basically no sleep and was a walking zombie, my twins were bfing all the time, it was stressful being with the two on my own even at home because they weren't super happy babies etc there was no way I could have done it for that reason despite being a seasoned traveler.
If you don't have that problem I think it could be possible logistically, would allow a lot of extra time to get through security and figure out how you can feed both at the same time for takeoff and landing. Also would try to get a connection on the longer side or maybe direct flight?
