Trouble TTC

How long do you rest after an IUI?

I typically lay there for 15 - 20 minutes. They tell me to take it easy for the rest of the day. But I think I may have to come back to work after my next one and I'm worried. Granted I wont be lifting or doing anything stressful. Just sitting at a desk with some discomfort I figure. Just wanted to poll you ladies and see how your after IUI routine goes.

Re: How long do you rest after an IUI?

  • I lay there for about 15mins, then get up and get on with my day.  My first two IUIs were very mildly uncomfortable, the last two had more follies so I was more bloated and feeling blah, but it was manageable.  My clinic also did B2B IUIs and day 1 was usually ok, but the second day I felt crappier.  I am lucky in that I work from home, a desk job.  As long as you don't have a lot of physical requirements at your job, I would think you should probably be ok to go to work afterwards.

  • I read a study where women who rested in place for 20 minutes had a measurably (but not hugely) higher chance of pregnancy. But it didn't compare various times of resting, it was 20 min or nothing.

So I will definitely insist on my 20 minutes, but it also makes me worry if longer might be better...even though I know the sperm have gotten there by now, maybe there's something else involved?

My RE had me lay down for 10 minutes after the IUI. I had back to back IUI's (Thurs/Fri) and went to work in the office after the first one and went home and rested after the second one. I had ovulation pain the day of my second one so I took it very easy and stayed in bed/on the couch the rest of the day. My work is very flexible so I would have stayed home after the first IUI if I didn't feel well.

    Me: 33, DH: 32

    HSG: 11/13/13- tubes open
DH SA: SUPER sperm (145 million, 84% motility, 22% morphology)
All infection disease and immunity blood tests NORMAL

FIRST IUI May 2014: 100 mg Clomid days 5-9, third ultrasound CD 13 revealed four follicles 27, 24 and 20 and 13mm. Trigger shot May 28 with IUI May 29 and 30 (fingers crossed) - BFN started spotting 11DPO :(

IUI #2 B2B 6/23 and 6/24, three mature eggs and 130 million sperm! FX this is the month!  BFN 7/8

3rd cycle benched due to cysts - TI with OPK tests -  BFN

3rd mediated cycle: Clomid+Trigger+TI  (three follies left side, one on right as usual....what the hell right ovary get it together and produce some damn follicles!) 7DPO progesterone level 43 with NO suppositories YAY for a natural strong ovulation. Beta canceled started spotting 13DPO - Third time is not a CHARM! 14 day cycle WTF! Everything looks normal - RE wants to start injectables next cycle so this cycle I'm benched

Officially benched until March....but still plan on trying the baking soda douche due to my excessive and thick CM

  • I've gone right back to work after IUI. Granted none of them worked but that wasn't why.

    Me: 32  DH: 33  Married: March 2004

    July 2006: started TTC
2008: HSG (normal), couple rounds of clomid through gyno
2008 - 2010: dragging my feet out of fear and procrastination
October 2010: first consultation with RE, dx PCOS and fibroids (DH slightly low count/motility)
Oct. 2010 - Dec. 2012:  In DENIAL! avoided the issue because I was scared of surgery
January 2013: returned to RE, fibroids grew significantly
February 2013: second HSG, fibroids pushed on tubes which blocked them somewhat
March 2013: MRI to determine what type of surgery may be necessary

July 29, 2013: fibroids (5) removed via robotic laparascopy
August 2013 - Nov 2013 : benched due to recent surgery

    IUI #1, Dec. 24, 2013, BFN
    IUI #2, Jan. 25, 2014, BFN
    IUI #3, Feb. 25, 2014  BFN
IUI #4 canceled due to lack of response to letrozole
    IUI #4.1 April 28, 2014, BFN

May 16, 2014: wtf consult, start prepping for IVF in June and add injects for one last IUI in the meantime
IUI #5 started letrozole and bravelle but canceled after HSG led to new diagnosis

May 21, 2014: third HSG, tubes blocked, one at the beginning, one hydrosalpinx??
June 11, 2014: consult, approved to move on to IVF because the hydro is not completely blocked therefore allowing fluid to move through slowly rather than backwards
    IVF #1 August 8, 2014 - 3dt of 2 embryos, BFN
September 17, 2014 - 4th HSG, the right tube is very patent (open!!) dye went straight through this time. Weird!
    October 2, 2014 - started metformin treatment
    November 14, 2014 - blood work, brought A1C down from 5.8 to 5.5

November 26, 2014 - RE finally back from vaca and reviewed my chart, no more IVFs for rest of calendar year
December 1, 2014 - Right after Thanksgiving, I called a new clinic and got in right away! Plan for IVF
    December 17, 2014 - ER! 29 retrieved (!!), 16 mature, all 16 fertilized (ICSI)

    IVF #2 December 20, 2014 - 3dt of 3 embryos, BFN

We are done with treatment unsuccessfully. :(

I usually lay there for about 10-15 min. My RE just tells me not to do anything crazy or too strenuous. I usually take advantage of that and let DH do all the work for me that day while I rest ;)

  • I lay there for about 10 minutes, then I recline on the 1 hour car ride back home.  I don't go back into work if it's a week day because for some reason, I am sooo sooo crampy and in pain, that I am just not sitting at my desk for the rest of the day.  I freaking hate IUI's.

I'm in the right back to work camp. All of my IUIs have been weekday early AM, so I have the procedure, lay there for 10-15 mins (depending if I have to rush to a meeting), hop (not literally) into the car, and back to work.

I'm lucky that my RE is 10-15 mins away from my job, so it is easy to slip in and out for appts.

After work, most IUIs I have gone to the gym, but this most recent one I didn't because I had the cramps of a lifetime once I got home from work. :(
