any one done crossfit?

I have never done this before, but I am looking for something to motivate me. I am runner but I am having hard time getting out the door to run by myself. I need someone to tell me what to do, so I am looking into crossfit for the fact that someone will make me do something. I love to work out, i just need a little motivation.

Re: any one done crossfit?

  • No, but I'm considering it. I used to do outdoor boot camps (which are really big in San Diego) before kids, and I loved having muscle tone. I'm also a runner and have no problem motivating myself to do cardio stuff on my own, but I need a class to motivate myself to do muscle toning exercise. And I can't find a boot camp that fits my schedule - mornings are out because DH leaves by 5:30 am, and I can't find one late enough in the evenings for after the kids are in bed. But there is a Crossfit near my work that has lunchtime classes. I don't aspire to be a super muscle-y Crossfit games competitor or anything, but would like to try it. I might sign up once I get through our son's upcoming surgery and recovery.

  • I did it for approx 2 months just before and right after my bfp last year.  It was good motivation being in a group.  I also mostly run but have trouble finding motivation.  This seemed to help. I want to get back into it, but I remember how much I hurt the first week and am slightly scared :(

  • If you do it, just be careful. A lot of places don't teach correct form, resulting in a lot of injuries. My H's workout partner had to stop Crossfit because he royally screwed up his back.
  • I totally know that is the "now" work out plan, I am just trying to find something to get my butt into gear b/c I want to get back into working out. I am looking for a jump start :)

  • I used to do it pre-baby but like others said it is dangerous because "trainers" can get certified in a weekend and teach improper form. I used to be a personal trainer and it took me almost a year of studying and training to get my certification. Now I'll get of my soap box :-) it's also super expensive

  • I think the OP hit the nail on the head when she mentioned that it's a trendy workout now - and I think that's why it gets bad press.  Any workout done with incorrect form and led by an improperly trained or inexperienced person could cause damage.

The PP who said it's expensive is correct, but here the classes I'm considering are $220 per month.  So if I did it like 2-3x a week, or maybe 10 classes per month, that works out to $22 a class, so still way less than a personal trainer.  The program that's near my work requires everyone to take a 6-class "fundamentals" series to work on form before taking the regular classes.

I wish there were some other sort of intense class that fits my location and schedule, but for now, it looks like the best option.

I've never done it but am not a fan based on things I've seen/read. Seems very unsafe as the motivation seems to be how fast and how many reps you do, rather than correct form and quality of the movements/lifts. MH and I followed starting strength 5x5 program with great results. You can do this at most any gym for ALOT less $$$!!! Good luck. It's hard to get into any new routine or program, just gotta start and stick with it. So you're on the right path :-)
  • I think a big part of the problem is that anyone with $$ can open a gym and call themselves Crossfit, and since it's a really popular thing now there will be a lot more shitty ones just looking to make a quick buck.

Ditto PPs about the important of finding a good gym/trainers. That is very true regardless of whether it's a Crossfit gym though.

Good luck whatever path you take - motivation to get up and move can really be the hardest part of a workout!

  • I did crossfit for almost 3 years before I got pregnant. I loved it. I was in great shape and I enjoyed the workouts. They are usually less than 20 minutes but really intense. I also liked the competitive nature of it. It's really hard at first but if you are patient and stick with it most people come to love it. Totally recommend it. I would do it again but it's pretty expensive and I don't have the time right now.
