What's in your crib????

I'm still abiding by the whole "crib should look like a jail cell" (this is what the nurse at our parenting class said). I literally have nothing in my LO's crib, just a fitted sheet around the mattress. I've noticed in a few pictures that some people have put the crib bumpers in, blankets, toys, etc. It got me wondering if many people have started to use these things. I've had family members tell me repeatedly that I could put the bumpers in now that she's rolling all over the place, but everything I've read says that they are still a suffocation risk. Just wondering what is in everyone's crib.

  • I voted nothing but really I have a handful of pacifiers and a hard plastic owl night light.

  • We just have a crib sheet.  Definitely no bumpers.  I do put toys in there if he is in there playing (while I clean or shower), but they don't stay in the permanently.

  • Mesh bumper because LOs kept waking up with their fat legs stuck between the bars. Also each girl has a plush doll and a small plush crinkly toy. I often hear them playing or talking to their toys in the MOTN if they wake. Haley often plays for about 10 minutes and then rolls over and hoes back to sleep. I also have recently put about 6-8 pacifiers in their cribs. I have seen Haley on the video monitor stop herself from crying by finding a paci and sticking it in her mouth. No blankets yet though.

  • I was wondering if that pacifier trick worked. Happy to see that it does!
  • A fitted sheet and a small lovey with a pacifier attached. We also have a crib aquarium mounted to the side.

  • No option for me. A fitted sheet & his elephant lovie. Sometimes I will hear him wake up & shake his lovie for a minute & then go back to sleep. He also uses it as a pillow occasionally.
  • A fitted sheet, pacifiers and an aquarium mounted to the side. He falls asleep (with me watching) with the seahorse and a stuffed animal in there but I take them out once he's asleep.

I was so psyched when we got this to work bc they were waking up a lot at night when it would fall out. It took awhile though. At first they didn't know the pacis were there, so when they woke up crying, I'd take their hand and put it on the paci and then they'd put it in their mouth. After awhile they caught on and started looking around for the pacis themselves. I have to make sure there's a few on each end of the crib so there's always one within reach.

  • Dd has mesh bumpers, a crocheted blankets, and a handful of lovies. She talks to them and 'holds court' before she falls asleep. After she's out I move them all. But, she's had awesome neck control from day one so I've never been super concerned with suffocation. Maybe that's dumb according to some ppl here, but I'm comfortable.
  • I said just a sheet, but I do have a mesh bumper. But I was unsure which type of bumper you were referring to.

  • Before I moved the crib into our room beside our bed I had a fitted sheet a blanket bumpers all kinds of stuffed animals and toys but she didn't sleep in there lol I would sit her in there with her toys while I was in there putting her clothes away. Now that the crib is in our room by our bed it had a fitted sheet on it a mirror attached to it that lights up and a small stuffed animal... I think there may even be a dog biscuit somewhere that our pup hid. I have to check every night before I put her down. She's not big enough for biscuits yet ;-)

  • Sheet and a glo worm. I'll put the bumper on at 1 year. She has got her ankle stuck a few times.

  • Here is a picture I just took. Also that is the first time I've ever seen her do that with her glo worm toy.

So she has the fitted sheet, mesh bumper (on only one side) and her glo worm (plays music and lights up). On rare occasions at nap if she's been fighting it I'll put an A&a blanket tucked in width wise (I sometimes snuggle it so it smells like me) and that helps her sleep. But this is not the norm. image

No mesh bumper but he has a small A+A washcloth lovie, dragon lovie, and a musical stuffed donkey. They usually end up on one side of the crib while he sleeps on the other.

I definitely should have specified mesh or not. Sorry!! #pollfail
  • Crib sheet and mesh bumper in baby girl's crib. She also was rolling around and getting stuck in the slats and waking up pissed off.

Just this past week I have given them each a smallish stuffed toy to fall asleep with and then shortly after they fall asleep I go up and remove it.

Same here. When LO is one, I will put a blanket, toy/stuffed animal to cuddle, and activity center (that straps to the crib rails) in there.
  • Just a fitted sheet and a small lovey, but she only spends the first half of the night in the crib. When explaining to my family on why we would not be using crib bumpers, I used this Journal of Pediatrics articles....

    https://www.jpeds.com/article/S0022-3476(07)00363-0/fulltext

I was shocked at how many older babies (7, 12, 14 months old) die from suffocation due to crib bumpers. I guess I used to think it was only tiny newborns with no head control.

  • Crib sheet, baby, and her small lovey blanket thing. Really it is a burp cloth with satin on it.

  • I said fitted sheet and bumpers (mesh), but you had no option for toys without a blanket. She has 2 plush toys that live in the corners and a pacifier that she can grab, if needed. No blanket.

I see that a couple people mentioned head control. I don't know that much about it but it seems like head control maybe doesn't have that much to do with it. Just because a baby can move their head, doesn't mean they necessarily know that they should. Is that instinct or learned? Even if it's learned, I wonder if maybe they might not even wake up long enough to realize they aren't getting any oxygen.

I'm too paranoid. It's just the baby and the fitted sheet in our crib.

Paranoid parent, here. The baby and the fitted sheet. I'd do a paci, but my child still hates them. He still sleeps in a sleep sack and so far has not gotten stuck in bars.
