Camping - wwm14d?

Me, hubs, baby. my mom and my sister. tent camping for the weekend? is this possible? there is only some shade, a river, no cell service (unless you drive back to the freeway). we are skilled in the arts of blue tarp camping (for rain) but i suppose we can make our own shade. what about LO? is it safe to keep her in the shade the whole time with sunblock? bug repellent?
I really want to go, but I'm nervous about overheating (it will be in the high 70s) and getting too cold (overnight lows in the low 50s). and sunburns. the napping/eating/playing is "under control."

what am I not thinking about? bad idea? go for it +advice?

We have a cabin up north and this was our debate. Our answer was no because it's too far away from a hospital (1+hours) and no running water. And I don't think babies are supposed to wear sunscreen under 6 mos? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

We are however going to our cottage at the beach. We are getting a shade tent for LO and going to the beach in the morning before it gets too hot (10am)

That was our thinking about going away this summer. Hope it helps!

  • We went camping Memorial Day weekend.. We took the bouncy and swing (portable one) lots of extra clothes for LO just in case and kept him in the shade as much as possible. Pack and play with a crib sheet over top could serve as a bug shield and shade if your LO doesn't mind being in it. It wasn't buggy when we went so that I don't have any advice on from experience but there are those clip on off things for bugs that you clip to you and it should protect LO if whoever is holding them is wearing it. We also always take the baby monitor so when LO goes to sleep we could sit out and enjoy the fire!
We took DS1 when he was 6mo or so and never had a problem!
    Enjoy!!

  • We went camping on Mother's Day Weekend. We did not have to worry about overheating but the cold. She stayed bundled up and in her bouncer chair or was held. She did very well.

  • sweet. no sunscreen, clip on if needed. lots of shade, and extra clothes. and snuggles.
  • And I think the sunscreen bit depends on your pedi. I just took Baby for his two month check up (he's was actually 10 weeks at the time) and pedi specifically said he's now "sunscreen approved!" Maybe worth calling and seeing what yours says?
  • I say go for it! Your camping sounds exactly like my camping! Johnson and Johnson does make mosquito repellent, not sure if baby has to be a certain age. As far as keeping cool you can make your own shade or dig a little hole so the ground is cool. Or use a wet wash cloth. The worst (ok I know there is worse things that could happen!!!) that will happen is you pack up and come home! I say go for it

My pedi also said sunblock was ok now.  I have refrained from camping with baby due to temperature concerns and sleeping arrangements. If you are comfortable with it, try it out!  And maybe just be ok to leave early if it doesn't work out.

My pedi said sunblock was OK too, especially those stick kinds (not the liquid kind). KWIM? It's like a roll-on. My pedi says it's better than getting a sunburn.

  • I would go if I lived up north more. Our weather here (FL) is to damn hot this time of year! We have our annual camping trip in October and we are going. Colton will be about 6/7 months old.
