2nd Trimester

Ladies with PCOS-Gluccopage Question

After you got pregnant did your Dr. take you off of Gluccopage or did you keep taking it?  My fertility Dr. told me I could stop, but then my OB wanted me to go back on it.  She said it can help prevent miscarriages, so I went back on it.  Anyways I was just curious.....

Re: Ladies with PCOS-Gluccopage Question

  • My OB had me take it until the end of the first trimester...then she said I no longer had to take it.

  • I took it until 12wks and weaned down.  I was only on 1500mg.  Then, I had an early 3hr GTT.  I passed.  I wasn't IR anyway, but took it to help my overstimming during IVF.

My OBs and my RE don't like it during pregnancy.  In the event I failed my GTT to the point of needing medication, I would have gone on insulin.  The reasoning.....Met/Glucophage is very hard on the liver (that's why you're supposed to have your liver function tested when you're on it).  It crosses the placenta and the baby's developing liver has to process it.  My RE and my OBs prefer that not to happen.  I think it's just a matter of opinion, but they ironically all shared it.

I never ended up on the insulin and I never took it during any subsequent pregnancies.  I did fail my 3hr GTT during my 2nd pregnancy and now I prick my finger 3x a day.  All is normal, so I never needed insulin to control it.

It can help prevent miscarriages in the 1st trimester....after that, it's really no help at preventing miscarriages since they usually happen for a reason this drug can't help.  But, everyone agreed that I should be on it during the 1st tri and then have a 3hr done and go from there.

  • I quit taking it during the 1st tri because I couldn't keep it down with m/s.  My doctor said it didn't really matter.
  • I'm on 1500mg until 20 weeks, at which point I'll start weaning and be off by 22-23 weeks.  I'm on it specifically because it can reduce miscarriage (I've had 4).

  • I was on Metformin until 13 weeks.  I asked specifically if I should wean off of it, and my doctor told me it was not necessary.  My doctors did not see a benefit for me past the 13 week mark.

  • the majority of REs have you stay on it for 8-12w.

Mine said to stop after 8w - but i titrated down slowly and was done at 10w with both pregnancies.

  • My OB also had me take it until the end of the first trimester...then she said I no longer had to take it. She said the placenta does all of the work now.
  • For my DS about 4 years ago, I was told by my OB to get off of it the day my 1st trimester ended.  And I was so nauseated the entire time I had been on it that I gladly obliged and didn't really ask why.  But, my DS is just fine and dandy.

This time, my RE suggested instead of 1st trimester, to the end of 16 weeks with some rational about the end of the organs growing.  My OB said that they didn't care and that it is considered pretty safe the entire time because they put people on it for GD.  So, they said it was totally up to me.  And after my first experience, I once again quit the day before I turned 14 weeks!

On soulcysters.com, they have a whole board and posts about it and a lot of the girls there stay on it their entire pregnancy.....I don't know.  But, I wish there was more definative research out there to read.
