Pregnant after 35

Where do you shop for Maternity Clothes?

Hi ladies,

Wondering what your favorite stores are to shop for maternity clothes?

I feel like the work dresses are either made from cheap material and won't go over well at my job, or they are super boring solid materials.  I guess I can always dress things up with funky scarves in bold prints but I work at a job where I am expected to dress very hip and edgy, but I'm not supposed to wear anything from cheap materials.  (it can be stressful and hard enough to meet the dress code even when I'm not pregnant!  Now add this to the mix and I'm not sure what the heck I'm going to wear!)

I dont really want to shell out a ton of cash on a new wardrobe for work, and some of the work dresses I'm coming across are $170-200 dollars for basic solid color wrap dresses.  WTH?!

Anyone have any good suggestions for stores that have quality dress clothes that aren't super expensive?  Its so hard to tell quality online.

Thanks!

  • I am making some of my shirts from shirts I already have. Thanks pinterest! And then I went to swap.com and found a bunch of clothes (old navy and liz lange) for cheap. First time shoppers get free shipping.

i always had a lot of luck at gap maternity. hip and edgy might be a stretch but i always felt like the clothes felt like real clothes vs the cheap stuff you get at mall maternity stores. they have a lot of basic separates that fit well--and i am not a gap shopper usually.

motherhood/pea in the pod/destination maternity. pea in the pod is definitely more expensive, but some of their fabrics are not just cotton tshirts. I love some of their dresses but I don't want to pay a lot for a dress or nicer shirt for work (and we have a casual dress code so I could wear jeans and a tshirt if I wanted to).

edited: Also if you don't mind second hand, check out second hand stores. I've had really good luck with the Goodwill by me for what I would consider nicer/dressier tops for $5 a piece.

  • Thank you all for the recommendations!  I did have a friend pick up a cute dress for me from a second hand store.

I didn't know Gap had a maternity store, I will definitely check them out  Thanks!!

Curious @Mandyreads, how do you make your own shirts from shirts you already have?? That has really piqued my interest!

it is so easy. if you check out pinterest posts...they will better explain it. but you just add a strip of elastic and it scrunches up the sides. just like you see in maternity shirts now. I've done 3 shirts so far and have 4 more I plan to do. just need to get white elastic now.
also maxi skirts are awesome for maternity. I got one at walmart and I think it will go a long ways in the pregnancy. and it isn't even maternity.

  • I've had great luck with the Liz Lang dresses at Target. For other maternity stuff I usually head to Motherhood.

  • Sounds like Pea in a Pod might be best for you (they sell it at Motherhood). It runs small. I don't know what you can find in nicer fabrics. I don't think maternity pants in wool, for example, even exist. Everything seems to be synthetics, or cotton.

Gap, Target, Old Navy, Motherhood. There aren't a lot of options. I heard that some H&M stores have maternity.

  • for CASUAL wear (lol) I shop at goodwill and Salvation Army....you might hit some great stuff there too if you just buy up a larger size(s) . The two stores are in the upper side of our town and they do really have some nice stuff.

  • Consignment stores! Maternity clothes from several years ago were of better fabrics than this year's seemed to be. Like how this past year everything was flimsy super-thin cotton/poly knit and really just a stretchy t shirt for 6 times the price. Or just poly. Of course the styles are from a few years back but you sound like you have the fashion skills to work around d that. Me- I just didn't care if I looked like I walked out of 2004. Or any other year outside of the 80s or 50s.

Like others said many non-maternity clothes work and are way cheaper and nicer fabric.

Only some gap, old navy, even target have mat. Clothes in the store and many stores only have teeny picked over sections. Very aggravating. Loft has mat. Clothes but only online.

  • I found a great maternity consignment shop in my area that sells only gently used clothing. It's saved me a bunch of money.

I also found a few flowy dresses at Ross that aren't actually maternity - the flowy style is in the season, fortunately, and those are my favorite finds. They fit well and lay nicely.

  • Thank you all for the great suggestions, ladies!   I found two really nice work maternity dresses on Nordstrom.com  and I am going to keep wearing my flowy loser fitting dresses for the next couple of months.   Hopefully that will carry me through the summer for work clothes because I know I'm going to need a lot of maternity clothes in the fall/winter (December due date) and I want to try to save the bulk of my maternity clothes spending money for those clothes.

  • I don't need work clothes since i stay at home but I always loved seeing maternity styles (dresses, dressy tops etc) from Old Navy. They are OK priced too.

I am super stingy when it comes to clothes esp when it's only for a few months. I would never spend $100 on any one item of clothing even if it was not maternity...

I also found some cute dressier tops on walmart.com under $15!
Fyi, neither Gap nor ON carry maternity stuff in their stores so you'd have to buy online. But they have an easy return policy. I often get 2 sizes in maternity stuff as you never know for sure how stuff will fit. Then return what you don't want.
  • ON has maternity in our stores here...  But I hated 99% of what they had.   :(    I did find a decent pair of jeans at Target, though.

Motherhood had a few decent pieces.  But then they had some stuff that I swear was from 1989.  It was pretty funny!

I have had the best luck at Thyme Maternity.  Not cheap, but worth it.  The fabrics and styles are nicer.

  • Cool! You guys are lucky. Our stores don't carry that stuff. Only returns of online purchases.
  • Have you tried The Loft? They have super cute work clothes and when they run their percentage off sales, its a pretty good deal. Great material, cute cuts, and decent prices!
  • I like Kohls, Target, & Meijer for
    Maternity.
