There is no rule. I have already started, and I've even had losses before. We're having two though and I kind of want to get things in order sooner than later.

I splurged and bought a unisex onesie once we had the u/s at 6w1d that showed our little one... We haven't bought anything since but I would really like to start soon so we don't have a bunch of big purchases all at once. I agree with PP that you should start shopping when you feel comfortable doing so. One of the girls I work with purchased her carseat/stroller prior to knowing what she was having but once she found out it was a girl she went crazy buying things at a consignment baby shop and started the registry for her baby shower.
**siggy warning**

It is really up to you and what you want to do. With DD I celebrated a good NT scan with a crib and changing table. I'm 14 weeks with this one and haven't made a single purchase.
I started at 12w, the day we found out it is a boy (we did the Maternit21 test). I'm 15w now and will ease up on buying stuff. I just got a little excited and love buying clothes so I started there. It took us 5 years to make this kid so I gave myself permission to go a little nuts! It's really just whatever you're comfortable with.
I started buying baby stuff years before I even got pregnant! My friends all thought I was so weird, but the jokes on them as now I have lots of nappies, bibs, books etc which we don't need to spend money on now!
Like previous posters said, there's no "right" answer to this one. We bought little things pretty much as soon as we found out, but we waited on bigger splurges like the crib, changing table, etc. until after we had our ultrasound at 18 weeks and knew that everything was okay. If you feel ready to start making purchases, I think that's totally okay!
